Alessandro De Carli never set out to disrupt cloud computing. In fact, before Acurast, before decentralized networks, before blockchain, he wasn’t even thinking about money, at least, not in the way crypto forces you to think about it. "I didn’t understand Bitcoin when I first heard about it," De Carli admits. "I didn’t understand money at all. It was just something you used, something that had value because people believed in it." That belief, how value is created and who controls it, became central to De Carli’s journey. A Swiss-Italian with a technical background, he started his career in mobile security at Credit Suisse, working on securing banking apps, digital wallets, and authentication protocols. It was high-level security work, the kind of thing you don’t think about until it fails. And then someone started pestering him about Bitcoin. "A friend of mine wouldn’t stop talking about it. He kept telling me I needed to pay attention, that I needed to apply my knowledge in mobile security to Bitcoin," De Carli recalls. "At first, I ignored him. But the more we talked, the more I started questioning everything I thought I knew." Bitcoin forced him to rethink money. Ethereum forced him to rethink trust. And decentralization—well, that changed everything. "When Ethereum launched, I realized this wasn’t just about money anymore. It was about a completely new way of organizing systems. The ability to connect with anyone in the world, to raise funds, to build applications outside of any centralized authority—it was a fundamental shift. And I knew I wanted to be part of it." That realization led him to co-found Papers, a company focused on self-custody solutions and mobile security for blockchain projects. The team worked with national banks, financial institutions, and some of the earliest crypto startups, long before ICOs became mainstream. But something wasn’t quite right. "We were still relying on the same infrastructure that traditional finance was built on," De Carli says. "Even the decentralized projects were sourcing compute from centralized providers. It was missing the point." That frustration led to Acurast. "If decentralization is going to work, it has to start from the hardware up," he says. "And the most decentralized computing device in the world is the mobile phone." Acurast isn’t just another blockchain project, it’s a full-scale reimagining of cloud computing. Instead of relying on massive, energy-hungry data centers, it turns mobile phones into a distributed compute network. "People don’t realize how powerful their phones are. Every year, the best engineering minds at Apple, Google, and Samsung pour billions into optimizing mobile hardware. These devices are efficient, secure, and, most importantly, everywhere." By using mobile devices instead of servers, Acurast removes the centralization risks inherent in traditional cloud services. It also unlocks an entirely new way to distribute compute power. "We’re proving that you don’t need massive infrastructure to run complex computations. You just need enough devices working together. And with 50,000 mobile phones already on the network, it’s working." But Acurast’s success isn’t just about computing power, it’s about access. "Today, most of the world’s data centers are in North America, Europe, and China. Entire regions, Africa, parts of South America, large areas of Asia, are left out. If computing power is the foundation of AI, finance, and digital economies, then those regions are being systematically locked out of the future." Acurast changes that. "Anyone, anywhere can contribute their phone to the network. A small village in Africa could set up its own decentralized cloud cluster. A student in South America could monetize their old devices instead of throwing them away. It levels the playing field in a way that’s never been possible before." And that brings De Carli back to the question of value. "I started this journey not understanding why money had value. Now, I’m building a network where computing power itself becomes a currency, where anyone can contribute and get rewarded," he says. "That’s what decentralization is really about. Not just redistributing power, but making it available to everyone." Next on Acurast’s roadmap is the launch of its mainnet token, ACU, scheduled for the next quarter. Welcome to the Beginners Guide to Polkadot API series! This particular tutorial will focus on learning how to build and compose decentralized applications (dApps) on the Polkadot network. We will also define what that means exactly, and how to get started with creating your first light client-powered dapp on Polkadot. In this tutorial, we will build a dead simple “You’ve Got Mail“ CLI app using the Polkadot API. build compose If you're new to Polkadot (and blockchain development) in general then keep on reading, otherwise, you can skip to the tutorial. Polkadot's is a protocol that coordinates and secures different rollups (often called parachains) allowing for a horizontally scaling, heterogeneously sharded, multi-chain approach to Web3. One of the keywords here is heterogeneously sharded, meaning that each shard, or blockchain (or state machine, if you want to get more technical), contains its unique domain-specific logic. Using the Polkadot SDK, anyone can build a rollup and inherit security from the Polkadot relay chain. They are typically a more secure, trust-minimized, efficient way of communicating to a blockchain. Light clients verify the state of the blockchain using Merkle proofs, ensuring it has not only the latest but correct state. As it just verifies the headers of the blocks, it has no need to download the whole state, making it ideal for resource-constrained environments. correct Unlike RPC connections, they do not depend on a single RPC provider and can be embedded in both the browser and natively. Gone are the days when “crypto” and “blockchain” were new buzzwords in the market. In 2024, exhibitions, conferences, and several other events dedicated to digital assets are common across the globe. I attended such an event in Brussels from July 8 to July 11 – The Ethereum Community Conference 2024 (EthCC 2024). It discussed the evolution of Ethereum as well as its scope in the future. Thanks to all the tech workshops, keynotes, and side events, this was an interesting event to attend as a crypto enthusiast. It was no less than a melting pot of a plethora of attendees from all corners of the world! The attendees gave their opinions and shared their knowledge about the global blockchain ecosystem. Keeping a few hassles like violent robberies aside, EthCC 2024 was organized impeccably and seamlessly. It did not bore the attendees with jargon and technical talks about things you can find on Google with a few simple clicks! The event balanced valuable technical information with an engaging atmosphere that fostered meaningful conversations. Blockchain is already a part of many people’s everyday lives and this was also the theme of EthCC 2024 – Onchain Everywhere. The theme was all about seamlessly incorporating blockchain into our day-to-day activities. Such activities include everything from authenticating products to tracking supply chains and much more. Also, the event had more than 500 side events, making my experience at the event pretty enriching. Getting down to the brass tacks, here are five of my most important takeaways from EthCC 2024: Taking Big Strides In Gaming The experts at EthCC 2024 discussed a new frontier for crypto gaming, making it the event's hot topic. We have always associated gaming to be an integral part of blockchain and crypto. Discussions about gaming highlighted the potential of blockchain to revolutionize the industry of gaming across the globe. Speakers and panelists talked about designing permissionless games, nurturing inclusive communities, and creating new streams of revenue for young gamers. These discussions helped me understand the impact of decentralized game development on the global gaming industry. This can really help people own genuine in-game assets. The discussions also gave me valuable insights into the mainstream adoption of blockchain in the world of gaming, sticking to the event’s central theme. AI And Blockchain Integration Believe it or not, we live in a world dominated by AI innovations. Within a few years, artificial intelligence has entered almost every task we perform every single day. Thanks to the need to leverage this technology, experts discussed the scope of integrating AI and blockchain. There were discussions around how a seamless blend of these two technologies will improve existing blockchain applications, leading to smarter and more efficient systems for every user worldwide. Web3 User Experience (UX): Progress And Challenges People worldwide have welcomed and appreciated Web3 as a valuable addition to cryptocurrencies. While there is significant progress in the field, Web3 is not devoid of challenges. EthCC 2024 acknowledged the progress made in this domain and the challenges the community needs to face head-on. For example, the community’s focus in 2023 was on account abstraction. This made Web3 more accessible with the development of smart contract account offerings. Talking about the key challenges, user onboarding and the general Web3 user experience need improvement. The discussions at the event helped me understand the issues that should be resolved in the Web3 space to ensure mass adoption. An insightful keynote by Vitalik Buterin (which I'll discuss later in detail) addressed the same concerns. Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Network (DePIN) This has to be the most valuable and strikingly hot concept discussed at EthCC 2024! Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Network (DePIN) are infrastructure models that employ tokenization to organize and incentivize orgnization’s progress. A consortium, the DePIN Association, focused on fostering innovation, setting industry standards, and promoting the development DePIN was formed at EthCC 2024. It brought together ten pioneering organizations dedicated to advancing the DePIN ecosystem. The founding members—Acurast, peaq, DePINHub, PowerLedger, U2U Network, Impossible Cloud Network, POKT Network, SafeJunction, IoTeX, and Geodnet—are at the forefront of innovation in their respective fields, contributing to a collective vision for a more connected, decentralized world. At the event in Brussels, DePIN experts spoke about how DePINs hold immense promise for reshaping how we build and manage infrastructure. By harnessing blockchain technology and decentralization principles, DePINs can revolutionize various sectors, from telecommunications and energy to data storage and compute power. Vitalik Buterin’s Visionary Keynote Undoubtedly, Vitalik Buterin’s keynote at EthCC 2024 was a highlight every attendee will remember. Combining his impeccable knowledge and the ability to convey the most complicated things in the simplest ways, Vitalik offered his insights into the blockchain network’s evolution. He talked about Ethereum’s quantum resistance, resilience, protocol simplification, and a lot more that inspired every attendee listening to him. I’m sure this keynote will spark many discussions in the days to come! The Final Word EthCC 2024 in Brussels was a memorable event, indeed. The company of like-minded professionals and listening to experts talk about the domains they know like the back of their hands was inspiring to say the least! The theme was all about seamlessly incorporating blockchain into our day-to-day activities. Such activities include everything from authenticating products to tracking supply chains and much more. Also, the event had more than 500 side events, making my experience at the event pretty enriching. The discussions also gave me valuable insights into the mainstream adoption of blockchain in the world of gaming, sticking to the event’s central theme. How To Lead Digital Transformations

I compared my startup’s face recognition technology against 3 of the big cloud vendors. Results below. I recently joined a startup called , and one of the first things I did was test our technology against three big cloud vendors. After all, machine learning is only useful if its accurate. Machine Box These cloud vendors provide machine learning as a service (sometimes referred to as cognitive services). They usually charge per API call and require sending data (like images) to a public API endpoint. One of the key value propositions of Machine Box is that it can run on premises. No need for sending data out of your infrastructure. But can Machine Box compare in accuracy to the big guys? I wanted to find out. To keep things simple, I decided to compare facial recognition technologies. Machine Box’s facial recognition technology is called . I picked an image with a lot of faces and ran it through to see how many faces it acurately detected. I then ran the same image through the big cloud vendors’ cognitive services. These were my results: Facebox Facebox Facebox detected more faces than the other big cloud vendors’ machine learning services Facebox was able to pick up every single face that was not obscured in the photo. Two of the three cloud vendors came close, but missed a few. One vendor didn’t pick up any faces. Next, I wanted to compare the celebrity recognition capabilities of these technologies. I used to train Facebox on every US politician, then picked a random photo off the internet of some members of the US House of Representatives. one-shot teaching GOP members of the US House of Representatives I posted the photo to Facebox and the same three cloud vendors. These were the results: Comparing Machine Box’s celebrity recognition to 3 big cloud vendors Facebox performed even better than expected. Oddly, the cloud vendor that failed to detect any faces in the earlier test was able to eek out a meesley 13 known people in this image. Cloud vendor number 2 The first cloud vendor recognized two members of the house. The third cloud vendor doesn’t offer a celebrity recognition service, or any easy way to train it with known people. Facebox recognizes almost every member of the House in this photo Facebox picked up all but a handful of members of the house. When thinking about facial recognition or celebrity detection, it might be wise to consider Machine Box.

The 99% Accurate Machine Learning Algorithms You Shouldn't Buy Machine learning is now everywhere and seems to be able to solve most problems. But running neural network is not an easy task without a proper data science team. So more and more companies are issuing A.I. focused Request For Tender. One main challenge is: how to measure the accuracy of an algorithm? More than often we see requierements to one accuracy metric : Your Machine Learning algorithm needs to have over 90% accuracy. - another artificial intelligence Request For Tender This article will show that a high score can hide poor business performance. Detecting a rare problem is inspecting wind turbines since 2011. By 2019, we have acquired 4 millions of pictures. During the same period, our experts annotated only 6000 high criticity defects. Cornis On average, only 0.1% of the pictures contains a high criticity defect. The worst would be a system predicting no defect. Such a ridiculous system would still be 99.9% accurate on this database (6000 defects are only 0.1% of 4 millions  images). defect detection algorithm False negative Other metrics can give you better information on the performance.  Since high critical defects are what we don't want to miss, we can count how many defects the algorithm detects. We call this metric the rate. true positive If an algorithm detects well the 6000 defects of our database it has a 100% true positive rate. If it misses 600 defects, it has a 90% true positive rate. Is this the score you should ask for? Is a perfect 100% true positive rate telling that every detection is a defect? Not at all. This score only tells you that the solution doesn't miss any defect. But missing very few defects has a cost : the number of false detections. Let's imagine the dumb algorithm that says that every single image contains a defect. It will well detect 100% of the defects but also 100% of the images without defect... To judge a machine learning algorithm, you need to check at least four metrics : The rate: Defects detected true positive The rate: Defects missed false negative The rate: No defect and not detected true negative The rate: No defect but detected false positive Even if these four metrics are mandatory, they may not at all reflect any business value. You still need to use them to compute business KPI. Back to work To expertise a wind turbine, we process the images of 4 faces of the 3 blades. We slice the blade panoramas on small 256x256 pixels images to detect defects. We count on average 150000 images per wind turbine to analyse. If no defects are on this turbine, a 99% precise algorithm will still detect on average 1500 images. The main expertise KPI is the time spent per turbine. How much time can we gain by keeping only 1500 images on the turbine? We discovered the hard way that the answer can go from 99% of the expertise time to . no time at all If all the detections are around the same zone, the expertise can last only some minutes. If detections are happening about everywhere on the blade, expertise will be longer than without A.I. Better than a random 99% score, a KPI improvement. In 2019, Cornis announced expertise twice as fast thanks to A.I. This algorithm is far from 99% false positive performance. But with our tools you can perform quality expertise in half the time you used to. When you want to assess the quality of a machine learning algorithm don't ask for a magic 99% number. Ask for several evaluations and focus on how it will improve your processes.
