Startups exist as long as they have money in the bank — it seems so simple, but founders often overlook this aspect being busy building their company. Meanwhile, empty coffers are the top reason why startups fail. According to CBInsights, 38% of startups shut down because they run out of cash or fail to attract new funding. It's a common scenario when startups spend a lot and are short on cash while expecting additional funding from investors. But this may not happen, and the company will close. Counting on existing funds and lowering the burn rate, instead, can prolong your runway. And this is the right thing to do: Given the market situation, a low burn is a good sign for investors to support a company. The principle is “earn more, spend less” (thanks, cap!). But what costs should companies cut? And how can they do it wisely? Drop Nice-to-Have Things Startups should trim non-vital expenses that have emerged over the past 1-2 years. Software subscriptions and office rent can eat up a big chunk of a startup’s budget — review what they cost you. List all services your team uses, and give up those not essential for daily operations, or downgrade them to cheaper or free plans. These could include CRMs, tools for project management or communication. Cloud storage costs can also add up quickly, so check them too. If possible, defer payments for the services you need or opt for installment plans. If your company rents an office, consider switching to remote work. You can also try a hybrid format and rent co-working space only for days when your team needs to brainstorm or meet with partners or clients. Also, consider outsourcing or making some roles part-time in design, coding, marketing, legal and accounting services. When it comes to employee perks, think twice. Some startups cross off these benefits, but this isn’t right. Most companies don’t send their teams to exotic islands, and having some bananas in the office is nice and won’t cost you much. Case study of our portfolio company RedTrack.io, which develops a tool to track and analyze ad performance, reduced its monthly burn rate from $70k to $10-20k within a year. In December 2022, the team saw they couldn’t cover their burn using available funds and cash collections. They had made changes to the product in mid-2022 but needed time to see how it would affect sales and revenue. At that point, the startup was running out of money. For the months ahead, the team planned cost-cutting combined with growth activities, intended to help the company approach zero burn. The startup suspended new R&D initiatives to focus on growing and selling its existing product. It also gave up the office, some subscriptions, and laid off part of the sales, marketing, development, and customer support specialists. However, the team reduction was minimal to allow the company to keep growing. The same logic applied to marketing budgets. Costs were capped so that growing revenues would cause a gradual decrease in burn. Also, the startup received convertible loans (CLAs) from investors and business angels and later obtained a credit line to cover cash gaps during the initial period of plan implementation. By actively securing annual deals with clients paid upfront, the startup achieved a positive cash flow while keeping an optimal net burn. Did you say Bananas?

At , we’ve spent the past year working with a new long-range wireless called , designed specifically for the Internet of Things. Beep technology LoRa LoRa is different because, though it operates on unlicensed spectrum like Wi-Fi, it works at very long range. That means you can very easily deploy wireless sensors across an entire corporate campus, or track assets on a large site, with a single access point. So instead of just covering one home, an access point can cover several miles. It also supports multiple access-points or towers, meaning cellular-like networks, for the Internet of Things. You probably don’t believe me when I say of range. You shouldn’t yet. Every year a new wireless technology comes along claiming insane range that doesn’t pan out in the real world. Manufacturers tout ranges based on line-of-sight deployments with no interference. That’s all fine and good, but irrelevant for most real-world deployments. miles (By the way, we know of a LoRa deployment achieving line-of-sight, with a very tall tower in rural California. But really, who cares?) 100 miles We’ve been testing our system here in San Francisco, which is probably the toughest place to build a wireless network in the US, due to interference (lots of other radios) and topology (lots of hills). But our sensors still get several miles of range. We’d like to share some more granular data on network quality, that’s coming later. To start, here’s a map tracing out a route I took on my scooter, testing out the range of our sensors and a single tower on the roof of our office. This certainly not a scientific, and it’s not representative of high-quality coverage. But we found it to be an interesting snapshot and thought we’d share. If you’re testing LoRa radios, we hope you’ll do the same. (We’ll even have hardware you can use for testing soon.) First, here’s a quick look at the trip. It may not make a lot of sense until I talk it through, so please read on. Okay, let‘s break this down. Here’s the “tower.” It’s our LoRa gateway — the equivalent of a cell tower. It has a 6dB-gain antenna, and this one’s solar powered, just for fun. It’s on the roof of our 2-story office. Both of the buildings next to us are taller than ours, so it’s not a great location, but it’s not bad. Consider it a B+ site. “Tower” on the top of Beep Networks HQ, 21st and Mission Here’s where it is on the map. Now, the test setup. I put this sensor in my backpack, with its big whip antenna (~3 dB gain) hanging out the side. Inside the blue box is a LoRa radio operating at 27 dBm (500 mW). That’s quite a bit higher power than a standard off-the-shelf LoRa radio — we boost the signal with a power amplifier. (It’s still within FCC limits, just a bit more complex design. Maximizing range is part of what we do here at Beep.) The sensor is set to send its location about every 10 seconds. It only transmits once, so if a packet is lost, it doesn’t show up on the map (in a standard setup you would retransmit several times if you don’t receive acknowledgement, but we turned that off). LoRaWAN The line that connects the dots shows the order in which they were received, but it doesn’t show the actual path traveled. If you see a lot of dots right next to each other, that suggests that most packets are getting through. If you see gaps with no dots, no packets got through in that area. So every circle on the map is a point where the sensor got a GPS fix and transmitted its location back to our tower. This is not a complete picture of network coverage. It’s a very forgiving test, really. For coverage testing we look at error rate (% of packets that were not received + packets that were received with errors / total number of packets transmitted). You’ll always lose some packets, which is okay, wi-fi works the same way. You just need a high enough percentage of them to get through to consider an area covered by your network. It’s better to consider this a test of range, not of coverage. But I digress. Okay, on to: . We used to walk, but that’s not fast enough. Biking those hills is exhausting. Enter, the perfect range-testing transport vehicle: the Buddy 125 scooter. Transportation I rode this scooter West around Twin Peaks, then North to the Marina, and back. Then out around Giants Stadium in South of Market. Then South around Bernal Heights, to test all our local hills. If you’re not , we have a lot of hills. We’re in a relatively flat spot, the Mission neighborhood, but less than a mile in any direction there are hills. familiar with San Francisco Source: . Mike Ernst The results were interesting. Here’s that map again, with the data points. First, let’s look at the extreme end of the city. That’s the Marina Green, at the northern edge of San Francisco. I hung out there for a few minutes and the quality of the wireless connection was terrible, most packets transmitted by the tracker were lost. But a few of them got through. What’s surprising here is that any packets got through at all. Seriously, that’s in the way. There’s no way that signal got through the earth, it must have bounced off… something. 3.7 miles away and there’s a 250-foot hill Even more amazing, look at the point marked on the map. Now, to be clear, I was cruising around Forest Hill for like 10 minutes, and only one packet got through. But it shouldn’t have. That’s on the other side of Twin Peaks, which is basically a small mountain in the middle of San Francisco, about 1,000 feet high. WTF Consider these links a fluke. You certainly couldn’t count on them. But — wow. It’s interesting to see the extremes. On the other hand, at the location marked “Climbing Pacific Heights,” I was riding up the South slope of Pacific Heights. That’s not line-of-sight to our tower, but it’s not too far off. You can see there were lots of dots even though I was cruising pretty fast, so the link quality there wasn’t bad. Getting up on a hill makes a big difference. Let’s look at one more interesting location: SoMa. This is 2.7 miles away from our tower. It’s pretty flat along the route, but there are plenty of tall (5–10 story) buildings in the way. As I was cruising down Bryant Street towards the water, the link was pretty good. Bryant is a large open road, and while it’s nothing like line-of-sight, there’s plenty of open space for radio signals to bounce around. As soon as I got to the water and turned the corner, I lost the connection (notice, no dots along Embarcadero, except where it intersects another large road). The implication is that the signal doesn’t do a good job passing buildings, but it does just fine bouncing them, when there’s a nice broad street. So, on a grid-based city, you might have a few miles of range down the but far less on the . Or something like that. through around avenues streets Once again, network coverage is a function of the topology and layout of the city as much as the radio’s spec sheet. This is a local game. LoRa’s Wireless Range is Bananas. A first look at Cellular for IoT in San Francisco.

Bitcoin has already won as a store of value — but for it to become everyday money, spending it needs to be seamless. Right now, it’s not. Whether it’s high fees, slow transactions, or lack of merchant support, using Bitcoin for everyday payments is frustrating. I’m building a wallet designed to change that. As a solo founder, I’m tackling the technical and UX challenges to make Bitcoin spending effortless. Here’s how I’m doing it to build the MVP for Nummus. Nummus Quick Overview of The Problem Quick Overview of The Problem Despite Bitcoin’s origins as electronic cash, today’s wallets paradoxically prioritize storage over spending. This market is divided into four categories, each with spending limitations: custody solutions (like exchange wallets) offer familiar interfaces but lack transparency, self-custody wallets (like Electrum) favor technical users, hardware wallets require physical devices, and Lightning wallets introduce channel management complexity. Average people attempting to spend Bitcoin face significant pain points: confirmation times, unpredictable fees, confusing address formats, and transaction irreversibility. While the Lightning Network addresses some issues, it creates new complications with channel capacity, liquidity management, and connectivity that present substantial barriers for average users. These challenges explain the significant gap between Bitcoin ownership and actual spending usage. While over 106 million individuals globally own some amount of Bitcoin, only about 400k use it for daily transactions (0.377% of Bitcoin holders, which is still a great amount) [1]. Similarly, merchant adoption remains limited despite Bitcoin’s global recognition — approximately 15,000 merchants worldwide accept direct Bitcoin payments [2] compared to the 100+ million accepting Visa [3] or Mastercard [4]. The real-world impact of these limitations becomes clearest in countries attempting to adopt Bitcoin for everyday use. In El Salvador, despite Bitcoin’s legal tender status, a 2023 survey by the Chamber of Commerce found that only 14% of businesses regularly process Bitcoin transactions [5]. The primary barriers cited were complexity of implementation, user experience issues, and technical limitations rather than any inherent rejection of Bitcoin itself. What’s missing in the market is a wallet specifically designed to overcome these barriers — a solution that abstracts away the technical complexity of both on-chain and Lightning transactions while maintaining true self-custody. Current wallets typically treat spending as one feature among many rather than optimizing the entire experience around payment scenarios. My wallet focuses on spending, creating an experience that rivals traditional payment methods in simplicity while preserving Bitcoin’s fundamental advantages. This approach reflects a key insight about technology adoption: new systems gain mainstream acceptance not through technical superiority alone but through accessible user experiences. Just as email and the internet needed user-friendly interfaces before achieving mass adoption, Bitcoin requires spending solutions that mask complexity while leveraging its unique strengths. Bridging the Gap: Leveraging Existing Payment Infrastructure Bridging the Gap: Leveraging Existing Payment Infrastructure The challenge we face is clear: How do we make Bitcoin as intuitive as swiping a credit card while preserving its core benefits? Consumer payment habits have been shaped over five decades, and expecting mass behavioral change in the short term is unrealistic. Perhaps the most elegant solution is also the most pragmatic — why not integrate with existing payment rails rather than replace them entirely? By treating established networks like Visa and Mastercard as complementary systems or layer 2 rather than competitors, we can create a hybrid approach that offers the best of both worlds. These legacy payment processors already have the merchant relationships, consumer trust, and infrastructure that Bitcoin lacks. By building interoperability layers that connect Bitcoin’s security and sovereignty with Visa’s ubiquitous acceptance, we can accelerate adoption without requiring sudden behavioral shifts from either consumers or merchants. This approach acknowledges a fundamental truth about technological adoption: new systems gain traction not by demanding users abandon familiar tools but by seamlessly enhancing them. From Concept to Creation From Concept to Creation I recognized both the challenge and the opportunity in this space, and instead of waiting for someone else to build the solution, I decided to take action myself. After six weeks of intense planning — defining the product vision, study, technical approach, and development roadmap — I began bootstrapping an MVP. My combination of technical background and industry experience from my last startup, BitEscrow, equipped me with the knowledge needed for this challenge. While I’m building independently, I’ve strategically assembled a small advisory board of industry experts who provide critical feedback and guidance when needed, ensuring I don’t miss important perspectives despite working solo. Working alone has also forced me to be ruthlessly efficient with feature prioritization. Every feature must justify its existence through direct user benefit rather than abstract “nice-to-haves.” This constraint-driven development approach has yielded a cleaner, more focused product than might have emerged from a team with more resources but less focus. Day in the Life Day in the Life My routine is built around maximizing focus and productivity while maintaining sustainable energy levels. Each day follows a deliberate structure that optimizes my performance. The first thing after waking, I take my supplements, followed by coffee and a focused five-minute Twitter session — not for doomscrolling but to scan for industry developments and news that might impact my work. After checking essential communications (email, Slack, messages), I sit down to plan my day and review my goals, todo.md, and company roadmap. By 10 AM, I’ve started deep work mode — a state of complete concentration that carries me through until 5 PM. This period always begins with dedicated learning time. For 90–120 minutes, I immerse myself in self-study, currently focusing on pure logic and mathematics as foundational skills. On alternate days, I dive into Bitcoin development, banking systems, or programming certifications. For my self-study textbooks, I am using material from publishers like O’Reilly for Bitcoin and programming, Wiley for banking and Finance, and the “Teach Yourself” series for maths — dense, comprehensive resources that don’t water down complex concepts. For my certifications, I am currently halfway through Boot.dev (great course) and plan to do more in the future. Throughout these study sessions, I maintain focus with minimal instrumental music, often the Factorio OST or my curated concentration playlists. After study time concludes, I transition to my dual operational roles: building and marketing. On development days, I livestream my coding sessions, which typically run for two to three hours. These public sessions create accountability and help build community around the project. After ending the stream, I often continue coding for another one to two hours to wrap up complex problems or implement solutions I’ve been contemplating. This separation allows me to balance the benefits of public development with the need for occasional deep concentration without an audience. livestream Marketing days follow a different rhythm but equal intensity. I write technical and educational content about Bitcoin’s potential as collateral, develop compelling product narratives, and strategically distribute this material across platforms where potential users gather. Rather than scattered posting, each piece of content serves a specific purpose in my acquisition funnel. Post-work, physical activity becomes essential — an hour at the gym resets my mind and prevents the physical deterioration that can come from intensive computer work. Upon returning home, I prepare a protein shake and do small chores: tidying my living space, meal prepping, running essential errands, and managing personal matters. Evenings involve light gaming, watching Primeagen on Twitch, or reading as mental cooldown activities. Weekends remain largely work-free unless absolutely necessary. My exceptions are limited to quick check-ins on analytics or responding to user questions — activities that don’t derail recovery time. Even during errands or commutes, I optimize for learning by consuming technical podcasts focused on development practices and programming innovations. All of this work is mentally demanding and requires sustained focus, so I’ve totally eliminated common cognitive drains from my life. Saying no to bad habits is arguably more important than saying yes to good habits; I avoid social media beyond my scheduled check-ins, having deleted apps from my phone to prevent idle scrolling. Processed foods, seed oils, alcohol, and recreational substances never enter my system — they create brain fog that can linger for days, turning potentially productive hours into wasted time. Digital hygiene is equally important. Blue light from screens disrupts sleep hormones, so I use blue light filters on all devices after sunset, have red lights throughout my space, and wear orange-tinted glasses starting at 11 am and red-tinted glasses after 7 pm. I’ve learned that even “minor” distractions like casual web browsing or YouTube can fracture attention for hours afterward. Sleep quality is non-negotiable, so screens disappear at least an hour before bed. This routine isn’t about performative discipline, Instagram morning routines, or Silicon Valley optimization culture — it’s a practical framework that serves my current needs as a solo founder. I’m not Patrick Bateman meticulously applying face masks, nor am I rubbing a banana peel on my face and waterboarding myself in overpriced ice water at 4 am. I still sleep in occasionally, take days off when needed, and work on personal projects that recharge me. This is a marathon, not a sprint, and sustainability matters more than perfection. What I’m aiming for is mental clarity, not some idealized productivity aesthetic for TikTok or Instagram. I’ve simply discovered that certain habits — limiting digital distractions, prioritizing sleep, avoiding substances that fog my thinking — directly improve the quality of my technical decisions and implementation. And when you’re building alone, those decisions compound dramatically. Each good choice moves the project forward; each suboptimal one creates technical debt I’ll have to address later. The difference between a clear mind and a foggy one isn’t trivial — it’s often the difference between shipping on schedule and endless delays. Tools of the Trade Tools of the Trade Obsidian serves as my second brain, housing my planning system, task management, internal documentation, and resource library. I’ve kept plugin use minimal to avoid complexity but have customized it with vim motions for efficient navigation. My vault follows the PARA method (Projects, Areas, Resources, Archives), providing a clear organizational structure without needless hierarchical complexity. Obsidian Claude Desktop and Terminal have become indispensable thought partners in my workflow. Unlike more basic AI assistants, Claude helps me refine complex technical concepts, identify gaps in my reasoning, and explore alternative approaches to problems — essentially providing the benefits of a technical co-founder without the organizational overhead. Claude Desktop and Terminal Cursor + Ghostty form the backbone of my development environment. This IDE and terminal combination offers the perfect balance of modern features with minimal bloat. Cursor’s AI-assisted programming capabilities help maintain momentum during complex implementation challenges, while Ghostty’s performance means I never wait for my tools to catch up with my thinking. Cursor + Ghostty Zen Browser manages the inevitable explosion of reference tabs that accompanies deep research and development work. Rather than fighting the natural tendency to open multiple resources, this tool helps organize and contextualize them, creating separate workspaces for different aspects of the project. Zen Browser Figma handles all visual design work, from early wallet mockups to final UI implementations. Its collaborative features allow me to easily share designs with advisors and Twitter for feedback without cumbersome export processes. Figma Texts consolidate all messaging platforms, preventing the cognitive drain of context-switching between communication tools and keeping conversations organized by project rather than by platform. Texts Raycast + Mac keybinds + Vim motions form the foundation of my keyboard-centered workflow. I’ve methodically reduced mouse usage to near zero, inspired by Primeagen’s efficiency-obsessed approach. Every common action has a keyboard shortcut, and application launching happens through Raycast’s intelligent command system rather than visual browsing. Raycast + Mac keybinds + Vim motions This environment represents years of refinement, eliminating any tool that creates friction or distraction. Technical challenges, regulatory questions, and market education all present significant hurdles. But the potential impact makes these challenges worth facing. In a TBG, the two main components of the state are the state description and the inventory information of the agent. The entities present in the environment are extracted by parsing the state description using the spaCy library, and only storing the noun phrases (e.g., fridge, apple, banana, etc.) in predicate form. We also extract the inventory information in a similar way. At each step of the game, the game environment generates a set of admissible actions, one among them being the best; as well as action templates (e.g., “insert O into S”, where O and S are entity types) which are predefined for the agent before the game starts. By processing these templates over the admissible actions, EXPLORER can easily extract the type of each entity present in the environment and then convert them to predicates. Figure 3 illustrates an instance of a predicate generation process. Along with this State description, EXPLORER also stores the taken Action and the Reward information at each step. Data Collection: Data Preparation: To learn the rules, an ILP algorithm requires three things - the goal, the predicate list, and the examples. The goal is the concept that the ILP algorithm is going to learn by exploring the examples. The predicates give the explanation to a concept. In the learned theory formulated as logical rules, goal is the head and the predicate list gives the domain space for the body clauses. The examples are the set of positive and negative scenarios that are collected by the agent while playing. Data Preparation: Execution and Policy Learning: In our work, we have mainly focused on learning the hypothesis for the rewarded actions; however, we also apply reward shaping to learn important preceding actions (e.g., open fridge might not have any reward, although it is important to take an item from fridge and that has a reward). In both the TWCooking domain and TextWorld Commonsense (TWC), the action predicates mostly have one or two arguments (e.g., open fridge, insert cheese in fridge, etc.). In the one-argument setting, the action becomes the ILP goal and the examples are collected based on the argument. In the twoargument setting, we fix the second argument with the action and collect examples based on the first argument. The goal will hence be in the form of . We split the examples (i.e., state, entity types, inventory information Execution and Policy Learning: in predicate form) based on the stored rewards (positive and zero/negative). We use entity identifiers to identify each entity separately; this is important when there are two or more instances of the same entity in the environment with different features (e.g., red apple and rotten apple). Additionally, EXPLORER creates the predicate list by extracting the predicate names from the examples. After obtaining the goal, predicate list, and the example, the agent runs the ILP algorithm to learn the hypothesis, followed by simple string post-processing to obtain a hypothesis in the below form: 3.2 Exception Learning As EXPLORER does online learning, the quality of the initial rules is quite low; this gradually improves with more training. The key improvement achieved by EXPLORER is through exception learning, where an exception clause is added to the rule’s body using Negation as Failure (NAF). This makes the rules more flexible and able to handle scenarios where information is missing. The agent learns these exceptions by trying the rules and not receiving rewards. For example, in TWC, the agent may learn the rule that - apple goes to the fridge, but fail when it tries to apply the rule to a rotten apple. It then learns that the feature rotten is an exception to the previously learned rule. This can be represented as: It is important to keep in mind that the number of examples covered by the exception is always fewer than the number of examples covered by the defaults. And, if you compare artwork that AI generated six months ago to what can be generated today, the difference is… well, what can I say, nothing short of revolutionary.When OpenAI launched its new ChatGPT image generation feature, it took just two days for social media to explode with Ghibli-like renditions of everything from celebrities to memes to personal photos. Now, despite the tool being capable of generating images in a variety of art styles, why did people choose Ghibli? Studio Ghibli has a very distinct art style, thanks to its co-founder Hayao Miyazaki’s approach, which focuses on hand-drawn techniques. Frames are hand-drawn by artists (like Kazuo Oga), and all characters possess traits shaped by the human touch of the artist. It’s an unmistakable style, one that evokes a sense of nostalgia, innocence, and beauty—an experience that connects with people on a deeply emotional level. Anyone who has watched a Miyazaki film can immediately identify the Ghibli style, and it’s precisely that recognition that makes it so magical when people see themselves, or even memes, rendered in that familiar world. But not everyone is happy about this trend… Some art lovers and creators have voiced concerns, and for good reason. The implications of AI-generated art bother people, but for anyone who’s been paying attention, the question of whether AI will destroy artists and the livelihoods of people isn’t one of "if," but "when." Your blood might be boiling, but I am already in the fifth stage of grief (acceptance) and have already given up! So, I think it’s okay to generate images in the Studio Ghibli style to give yourself some joy because there will NEVER be another Ghibli or Pixar. If we consider what we have today and what might come in the next 5 or 10 years, it’s more than clear that there’s no room for the next budding artist with a unique sense of creativity.A career in any creative field is now far too risky, and there’s simply no room for a learner to progress into greatness or for a great artist to be well-funded when "good enough" can be produced at a fraction of the cost. NEVER be another Ghibli or Pixar As AI continues to advance, you would have to be a genius from the start to secure work in many fields. There will barely be any room for an entry or average-level writer, coder, designer, photographer, artist, or model to find decent work. Right now, AI is already capable of producing work at about 80% of an average human’s quality level, and it can do so at a fraction of the cost. Imagine where we’ll be in five years. Most businesses will likely choose AI-generated work that is a 7.5/10, given its significantly lower cost, rather than paying a premium for a 10/10 human-created version when the difference is often indistinguishable to the average person. Let’s take a moment to reflect on the sheer amount of time and resources that went into creating a single scene in a Studio Ghibli film. A four-second scene from The Wind Rises (2013) took an animator one year and three months to complete. Why was so much time invested? Because it was a Ghibli film, and such dedication is what defines the studio’s legacy. But this level of investment would never be spent on the next budding artist, not when AI can deliver good enough results far quicker and cheaper. Again, don’t focus on what we have today, consider where we’ll be in five years. A career in art will be extremely risky for the next generation, as most businesses won’t pay you if you’re anything less than above average.Hobbyists will keep the creative spark alive, but art as a career? That’s simply not worth doing. No business would fund the creativity or uniqueness of an unknown artist at the cost of profit margins when AI can deliver decent results for a small fraction of the cost. I’m not blaming businesses for this; it’s simply a matter of economics. Investing resources in an artist in the hope that they might one day become the next great is no longer a sound strategy. There might be a criticism of capitalism here but that is a whole different story. And for those still in denial, AI doesn't need to be better than a skilled human; it just needs to be good enough for your clients not to care. Plus, not all humans are equally skilled anyway.If you love art, whether as a creator or a viewer, embrace the last hurrah and the joy that Studio Ghibli and its style bring us, because there will NEVER be another great artist in the future. You might disagree, but I will wholeheartedly generate a few images as I process what a historic moment this is for art, knowing things will never be the same. Even if you don’t participate, someone else will, and there’s no stopping this. For me, this is a feeling of melancholy as we admire groundbreaking human art styles, perhaps for the very last time. While I truly believe tech companies are wrong for stealing everyone’s work, including Miyazaki’s, it would also be wrong to sensationalize Miyazaki’s quote out of context. He made this comment after watching a demo of a horrifying, zombie-like creature with strange movements generated through AI in 2016. He also said the grotesque zombie movements reminded him of friends with disabilities and he thought that was an insult.  Clearly, his comments were specifically in the context of that demo and cannot be taken as his stance on generative AI art 9 years later. As of now, there has been no statement from the studio, and we do not know how he feels about all of this. As always, the anger is more directed towards regular people by those who feel intellectually superior. It is easy to punch below the belt. So, instead of protesting against our overlords, people find it much easier to criticize and hate the common people. The problem isn’t regular people generating cute pics for their own amusement; the problem is corporations stealing the work of everyone to train AI and putting people out of their jobs. The problem is when you use those works (like Studio Ghibli, which always promoted peace) to create hate speech and political propaganda. And, no common folk is using the Ghibli style and claiming it as their own original style. It’s an inspiration and a homage. If you think it’s wrong, would you have also said the same thing if an artist hand-drew something in a popular style as a homage? Is it an insult to Michael Jackson to do the moonwalk poorly? Is it an insult to the original singer if I sing a song poorly in front of my friends? Is AI-generated art not art? What if it’s based on my unique input? Many people would argue that a banana taped to a wall is not art, but people have paid millions for things like that. So, art can’t be defined by boundaries. If a digital artist has a character in mind and uses existing vectors and elements provided by the sketching tool to create their work faster, is that not art? If it is art, why is it not art if somebody is bringing their imagination to life using AI? Both have the same outcome, with only the technique being different. Yes, the art style is a remix of what has come before, but do all hand artists use original art styles without doing any derivative work? If you say AI art is still art, why are you saying art dies today? Art will always exist in some form. What dies today is the birth of groundbreaking art styles because: It is simply no longer a good career option for most to pursue.

Also, digital art did not eliminate traditional art; it significantly devalued it. Would people pay 10X more for human digital art when AI art can do the job? Forget people, will businesses pay? Will art become a more premium product? Yes, scarcity drives value, but that will be reserved for only the best. Even though handloomed clothes are now expensive, most handloom workers in India are displaced. The same will happen to art and other fields. Unlike in the past, when high-quality work commanded top dollar while mediocre work still earned a livable wage, the future where AI surpasses mediocrity will leave room only for the very best to sustain a career in many fields. That also means those who imitate will no longer have a career because AI does all the imitation now! Can we stop this? No, there is no putting this genie back in the bottle. If a country regulates or restricts AI, some other country will make it. And, even if a scenario existed, open-sourced copies of several tools exist which can be run locally by businesses. Plus, do remember that businesses control the governments in most parts of the world. If they want AI, they will use AI. It might be unfortunate but there is no other way!

What do board games, neuroscience, brain hacking, and common scents have in common? All are core to the board game WHIFF. The gaming world is often dominated by visuals, whether electronic or analog. At the Festival International des Jeux, I was able to test some games which break this mould. At the Nuits du Off, I was fortunate enough to bump into Dr Alice Drew and Dr Alice Vidal and test out their prototype party game, WHIFF. The Festival International des Jeux is one of the largest board game events in Europe, hosting the As d’Or (Golden Ace) awards, panels, exhibitions of new games, and the Nuits du Off or Protolab where game designers bring their prototypes to test out ideas, balance their games, and show off their unpublished works. The premise of WHIFF is simple. There are a number of vials on a beautifully crafted wooden turntable, each containing a different aroma. The actual smell is written inside the cap of each. To take your turn you select one of these, insert it into a wooden holder with a bulb, and choose your level of difficulty. There are three choices: easy - the color will match the scent


medium - the color will not match the scent


hard - the color may or may not match the scent Once a difficulty is chosen, another player checks the answer and inserts a color filter before turning on the light. The main player then takes the wooden holder and takes a good whiff. If this sounds too easy, you haven't tried it. It's based on solid research on how much of our sense of smell is based on visual information (as is our sense of taste). At one point, I managed to somehow get fixated on yellow being banana, so everything with a yellow light smelled like a banana. I did best with truffle and a red light, but only because garlic wasn't an option (I don't know why truffle with a red sensory input was garlic, and science has yet to provide a better answer than that humans aren't good at segregating sensory inputs). After trying the game, I arranged an interview the next day to ask more. How It All Began The first whiff of the concept came about while Drew and Vidal were finishing their neuroscience PhDs and followed their noses into the puzzle of how the brain integrates senses. Both already had a personal interest in the world of flavors and smells, and realized that they (and everyone else) were not good at identifying different smells isolated from context, so they started looking into challenging their senses. Around the same time, people were losing their sense of smell to COVID-19 infections, and the impact of this on quality of life was becoming more obvious. While other games do exist using smells (there's a short list of a few different ones at the end of this article), Whiff deliberately creates a mismatch between visual and olfactory inputs, and people often depend on the visual cue (the writer can attest to this - since playing this game everything yellow brings back the scent of banana). As well as appearing this year at Cannes, WHIFF also featured as a finalist in the DAU Festival in Barcelona. Showing its scientific roots, it’s also been seen at the Barcelona Science Festival in 2024. The Future? While the concept is simple, this is a game I can easily see making its way into homes for families and parties - throughout the playtest, there was a lot of discussion and laughter about the different scents and perceptions. Not only does it create a scent of competition, but it also helps explore and understand one of our senses which is simultaneously one of the most impactful and most overlooked. The inclusion of conflicting visual input may sound like it would have limited impact, but the effect has to be seen (and smelled) to be believed. Drs Drew and Vidal have also created workshops for corporate events and delivered them at a business school. Another is scheduled to be delivered to an architecture design firm, to help develop an appreciation of how our senses are integrated and how different designs can affect both smell and, as a result, taste and wider experience. While WHIFF is still published directly by the creators to order, Drs Drew and Vidal are speaking with publishers and distributors. The board itself, and the scent holder, are beautifully made of recycled wood by Roy Wolff and would fit in perfectly on a dining table after a meal (or before, if you'd prefer not to contaminate your senses before playing). The Science So, what’s it all based on? The Drs’ PhDs in neuroscience give the game away here. There have been a number of experiments over the years which establish how much we depend on the integration of our senses to process inputs, rather than treating each in isolation. Scent and sight are particularly linked, and it’s been demonstrated time and time again with everything from Brochet’s oenology-busting red/white wine experiments to Pepsi in Coca-Cola glasses (or Coca-Cola in Pepsi glasses) to blue steak that sight and smell have strong, sometimes unpredictable interactions. This opens up possibilities that go far beyond the obvious culinary and mixologist applications. It doesn’t go as far as lending weight to some of the more outlandish aromatherapist claims, but there is a comfortable middle ground where we can see the positive effects of designing environments to leverage multiple senses and their interactions. To scratch the nasal itch, there are a number of other games that use scents as a core part of gameplay if you want to expand your olfactory palette. SentoSphere SentoSphere does a series of sensory-based games, from family-oriented to more specialized. They are based in France, but many of their games are available worldwide. Bacchanales is, as the box art and name suggest, based on wine tasting. Playable by up to 7 people (more if you work in pairs), players bring along a bottle of wine each to taste (or rather for other players to taste) and score points based on identifying the different properties of the wine. The game includes a thorough guide to help players identify the different markers, and on average, first-time players get three out of five right. Voyage Olfactif is another party-style game using scents, but instead of trying to deceive the senses, it relies on identifying them along with different properties. A dozen images are laid out around the board and each player is secretly given one to try and communicate to the other players. They do this using one to three scents, which they can use to describe the scenes in different ways - whether the color is relevant, the smell is present in the scene, whether it’s got an abstract connection, and so on. I tested Voyage Olfactif at the festival, and not only recommended it but highly recommended a suggestion by one of SentoSphere’s representatives which was to try it with personal photos instead of the stock ones provided as a family game. Cortex Challenge With less of a focus on scent, Cortex Challenge is a fast and light puzzle game that plays with different modes, including smell and touch challenges along with mazes, duplicates, and others. While it’s less scent-centered than the others, the scratch and sniff cards do add an extra dimension to the gameplay.
