You know that you can’t screw up when doing something that matters to you or when you really care about the outcome, and yet high-pressure situations make many people react poorly and lose their calm. It leads to poor choices, bad decisions and can sometimes even lead to inaction. The higher the stake, the higher the cost of not being in control. Losing your calm and shutting people out when work gets a little bit overwhelming or feeling so paralyzed by pressure that you get stuck in an overthinking cycle hurts your productivity and performance. For example: Making a key strategy decision for your organization. Presenting your ideas to a large audience. Negotiating a big deal with a client. These are great opportunities where pressure is inevitable, and yet you need to be confident and aim high. When we aim high, pressure and stress obligingly come along for the ride. Stuff is going to happen that catches us off guard, threatens or scares us. Surprises (unpleasant ones, mostly) are almost guaranteed. The risk of being overwhelmed is always there. To stay calm under pressure, the first thing you need to do is come in touch with reality. Decatastrophizing will shift the focus away from these catastrophic thoughts and replace them with more balanced and realistic ones. To do this, ask these questions: What exactly is the problem or situation you’re dealing with? What’s making it stressful? Are these real expectations, or is it the result of self-imposed pressure? What’s the worst that can happen? How likely is it on a scale of 1 (not at all likely) to 5 (very likely). What’s the best case scenario? How likely is it on a scale of 1 (not at all likely) to 5 (very likely). What techniques or strategies can you use to cope with the catastrophe if it does happen? If the catastrophe occurs, what are the chances you'll be okay in 1 week, 1 month and 1 year from now? You have to stay realistic about the facts of your situation—distorting it will create unrealistic pressure that’s either impossible to meet or make the situation appear so frightening that you’ll fail to act right when you need it the most. Reappraise anxiety as excitement. A by Harvard Business School researcher Alison Wood Brooks found that people who see pressure situations as opportunities and not a threat perform better—those who reappraise anxiety as excitement end up showing more enthusiasm and performing better in subsequent tasks. study Reappraisal is a cognitive change in which you don’t actually change the surroundings that are causing negative emotions but instead try to alter your understanding of the circumstances. People either actively say, ‘Calm down,’ or they say, ‘Don’t be anxious.’ The hitch is that it seems quite difficult to find strategies to actually do that.” In a perfect world, it might be possible to reappraise one’s feelings of nervousness into an unaroused, nonchalant calm. Brooks suggests that, in reality, that’s too great a leap. “The argument is that anxiety and excitement are actually very, very close, but that anxiety and calmness are too far apart,” she says. So, instead of aiming for calm, the smarter strategy is to force yourself to make the more subtle, achievable mental shift from nervousness to excitement. Leverage your experience Pressure situations tend to heighten negative feelings while suppressing positive emotions and outcomes. They make you focus on what you can lose as opposed to what you can gain. Thinking about your past experience helps put things in perspective. It shifts your focus from worrying about things outside your control to things within your reach—your knowledge, experience, and skills. Using your past successes as a gateway to your potential future success can prevent you from feeling overwhelmed by stressful and anxiety-causing situations. When working under pressure, think about a similar problem that you solved before: What are the similarities between the two situations? What are the differences? Consciously evaluating this helps you understand that no two situations are the same, but you can always leverage knowledge and experience from one to another. What specifically did you do in those situations to perform at your best? Which behaviors were helpful? Which behaviors were damaging and prevented you from achieving your goal? How can you leverage some of that learning and adapt it to the current situation? Thinking about a similar problem that you’ve solved before makes the experience less frightening. For example: Dealing with the pressure of a job interview? Think about your past interviews where you left a positive impact on the interviewer. Worried about giving a presentation? Think about the skills you demonstrated in your previous presentations that left everyone inspired. Pressure moments are filled with uncertainty—you are uncertain that you will deliver the goods. Remembering your past successes ignites confidence—you did it before and you can do it again. As your confidence increases, uncertainty (anxiety) and pressure are diminished, freeing you to approach the task with your best effort. Nervousness becomes transformed into positive enthusiasm that is directed to the task, rather than anxious thinking that is distracting. — Hendrie Weisinger To stay calm and thrive under pressure, say it out loud: “I’ve done it before. I can do it again.” Think about the immediate next step Pressure creates a sense of urgency—you need to act quickly and get things out of the way. But thinking about the enormity of the task ahead of you can overwhelm you and prevent you from getting started. Pressure which should ignite action turns into procrastination. You keep putting things off with excuses that appear completely justified in those moments—not enough motivation, not the right time, don’t have the clarity or keeping busy with trivial tasks while ignoring important and complex tasks that must be done to accomplish your goal. \Robert Maurer states — “Radical change is like charging up a steep hill—you may run out of wind before you reach the crest, or the thought of all the work ahead makes you give up no sooner than you’ve begun.” He suggests another path altogether, “one that winds so gently up the hill that you hardly notice the climb. It is pleasant to negotiate and soft to tread. And all it requires is that you place one foot in front of the other.” This strategy of putting one foot in front of the other—taking small steps for continual improvement—is called . One foot in front of the other requires: Identify a small step and put it into action. Act, revise, and repeat step 1 till you seek the second-level challenge. To stay calm and thrive under pressure, ask yourself, “What’s the first small step you can take?” Always be prepared Despite your best efforts and planning, some things may not go as expected. When you aren’t mentally prepared to handle the unexpected, any deviation from the normal or even a slight change in your circumstance can throw you off balance by taking away your sense of control over the situation, making you highly anxious, and distorting your ability to think clearly. When dealing with high pressure, unwelcome events are not only dreadful, they appear devastating. You end up making bad choices and regretful decisions. In life, there will be times when we do everything right, perhaps even perfectly. Yet the results will somehow be negative: failure, disrespect, jealousy, or even a resounding yawn from the world. — Ryan Holiday To be less startled by the unexpected, train your brain to expect the unexpected. Headspace The next meditation app I tried was Headspace in 2019 before the beginning of the Pandemic. Headspace has quirky branding and a unique message. I found it very educational. I learned more about deep breathing techniques through the app. Some of these breathing techniques really helped my sleep if I did them consistently at bedtime. This was also an app that introduced me to sleep stories which are short ASMR stories you can listen to as you are falling asleep. These were also great for my bedtime routine. I did find that the app had some slowness and technical issues when I was using it, but I enjoyed using the app immensely for the most part. The company has special sales plans for and . students families Calm.com Most recently, I have tried the Calm app. I have tried the app for about 2 weeks so far and I have explored the daily content as well as sleep music and stories. I have not noticed any technical issues so far with the phone app or the website, which was reassuring. There are several daily lessons in mindfulness and mindful movement from teachers like Jay Shetty, Tamara Levitt, and Jeff Warren. Also, the numerous sleep stories are narrated by many celebrities like PINK and Matthew McConaughey. I allowed the app to send me reminder notifications, and the app reminds me to write down things I am grateful for. It also sends me messages to remind me to be more mindful during the day. These have actually been really helpful for me to take a minute to breathe and remember to practice gratitude. The app allows you to turn off the notifications or adjust the frequency so you don't feel overwhelmed by them. Strangely enough, during the Pandemic, I did not turn to any meditation apps to feel less stressed. I found Youtube to be the most accessible for me at the time. I found myself scrolling through my Youtube feed a lot for entertainment and stress relief. I found some channels that were helpful for meditation music and meditation ideas. Using these as a starting point, I encourage you to explore the internet for other resources! CalmWear: Aiding in Sensory Processing Disorder and Hypersensitivity

. Why? Because I think it’s perfectly OK for me to be terrified, but it’s not OK for me to stay that way. My biggest fear? Same as you, same as everybody else. I was afraid to speak in front of people. I’ve given over a hundred talks in the past few years A hundred talks later, . How did I ever get on stage, though? Well, here’s a little trip down memory lane, the series of unfortunate events that got me up on stage. I entirely blame and for this btw, if you want the tl;dr. 😅 I’m still terrified every time I go on stage Ioana Marcela Why did I do over a hundred talks, you might ask? Well, I do a bunch of things in this world. In my free time, I’m a Mozilla Tech Speaker. I also volunteer for the Mozilla Reps program, and I’m a Mentor in that program. Both of those programs are geared towards speaking to tech audiences and building communities. But I do like the idea of a paycheck and getting paid, so I work for Fidel as a Developer Relations Manager. And speaking in public is part of the job. I know, I must be a masochist. There’s no other explanation. 🤦 With Mozilla or work, I’ve met a lot of great people, Developer Advocates, Community Builders, and Developers getting over their fear of speaking so they could share their knowledge. Because there is not a lot to do in the “Speakers Room” at conferences, and because misery loves company, the question I always asked was: “How did you get here”. Everybody I’ve asked has a different origin story. There’s no common denominator, really. I will tell you a bit of my story, how I started out. It all started about 10 years ago, there was an event called Open Source Open Mind in Romania, and I was working for Mozilla at the time. They asked our team to talk about Mozilla. Still, I was terrified of public speaking, so it definitely wasn’t going to be me. Ioana said she’d do it, but she was travelling to the US and didn’t have time to do the slides. I volunteered to do slides; that was the easy part; I didn’t actually have to go in front of 100 something people. So I did the slides. . 😅 This was my first mistake On the morning of the event, I was waiting at the airport for Ioana to land when she calls me to tell me her flight got delayed, so I should go to the event and stall; she’ll get there on the next flight. I get to the event. . Marcela, the organizer, is a friend and a really nice person; she kept pushing our time slot later and later in the day. It came to the last time slot of the day. Someone had to go up on stage. This was my second mistake Marcela goes up on stage, looks for Ioana in the audience, but Ioana isn’t there yet. She then utters the words that sealed my fate: “And now, from Mozilla&mldr; Alex! Alex is going to come and speak about it!”. It took me a while to process. I went up on stage, I put my hands in my pockets, I kept bouncing from one foot to the other, and it took a good minute until I started speaking. It was horrible. I couldn’t face my audience. I was looking halfway at my slides, halfway at the sidewall. Sadly, the experience is recorded and . I still use it as an example of what not to do when I try to help other people get over their fear of public speaking. Luckily, the experience isn’t in English, so you can’t really understand how bad it was unless you speak Romanian. 😅 still up on YouTube The problem was, -no questions from the audience, no nothing. After I finished my presentation, there was a Q&A part. For every question I got, I kept stepping further and further into the audience space. At a certain point, when the Q&A portion was finished, I was literally in the middle of the room. once I started speaking, I couldn’t stop By the time I finished my talk, Ioana actually showed up at the conference. But the damage was already done. . After that first experience, I was horrified, nervous and . I had spoken in public without dying in the process vowed never to do it again Two weeks later, I was doing it again, speaking in front of 50 other people. That’s how I got started into all this. Turns out, peer pressure is a strong motivating force, especially if done live in front of hundreds of strangers. I’m being sarcastic here. Please don’t do this to your friends. I highly doubt it’s going to work a second time. You might call me the “Accidental Public Speaker”. The other hundred or so talks that followed, I have no excuse for those. 😅 In the meantime, I’ve learned a lot about things that help me get on stage and power through fear. I do some embarrassing things before I go on stage now. But they work for me, so I’ve and don’t fix it if it’s not broken. learned to accept the process One of the things that work for me has to do with the “Psychology of Winning”. If I make myself believe I’ve “won” this talk before it even starts, there no pressure to hype my fear levels. It sort of takes the edge off enough for me to start. And once I start, and get through the first 2 minutes of it, practice and a lot of other things kick in, and it’s all the better from there. How do I trick myself into believing I “won” something before it happened? Well, this is where the embarrassing things happen. The “Psychology of Winning” says winning is a state of mind that correlates to physical reactions to winning. The reverse is also true to some extent, so mimicking those physical reactions will induce a mild “winning” mental state. You see where I’m going with this. Before my talks, I find a quiet corner at the conference or an empty bathroom stall 😳. And I do winning gestures, like pumping my chest forward, raising my fists in the air, jumping up and down, and screaming my lungs out. How I Calmed My Nerves And Finally Overcame My Fear Of Public Speaking

Sometimes, you are going to screw up. Fact. Your business model may be flawed, an executive may do something illegal or immoral, your investment hypothesis may be drastically flawed. This will cause your revenue to go down, equity value to sharply react, and anxiety levels to rise. , you will have a situation like what has happened with COVID-19, where the , and , and the whole world will be struggling. Or global supply chain is drastically disrupted small businesses are left financially exposed In these situations, your employees will be anxious, investors will be anxious, and your board of directors will be anxious. Add in media attention, and anxiety will turn into everyone losing their minds. So, what do you do? How do you increase trust? How do you put their minds at ease? 1. Create a thorough plan In these situations, people want security. While you have to move fast, you also have to be extra thorough to provide that sense of stability and security that people are looking for. At a minimum, your plan should say the following: First, This is exactly how we were affected, and how we expect to be effected in the next year. Include industry benchmarks. Next, Here’s what we are doing to solve the problem, how much it will cost, who the key players are and their responsibilities, financial projections, strategic partnerships, communications planning, etc. List out steps to solve the issue. Finally, Here’s where we expect to be once this problem has been solved. again, include analysis, financial projections. Distribute your plan openly, and hold a forum for employees to vent, ask questions, pitch ideas, etc. 2. Be transparent Many people panic when they don’t receive enough information from their leaders, or when they receive conflicting information. It shows them that their leaders don’t know what to do. So, tell your stakeholders exactly what is going on. Be blunt, then build trust by telling them what you are doing to fix it. Chaos helps only those who are self-serving (in which case you should consider dismissing them). This is the formula: Honesty + Action = Increased Trust 3. Keep them updated Monthly, you should keep your employees on what is happening with your initiative. Again, be honest. They don’t need a State of the Union address where it is always going well. If you have to give them bad news, let them know what you plan on doing to solve the problem, tell them how you are adjusting the plan, or how you are modifying your actions to achieve the desired goal. I have found leaders are generally pretty good at doing #1 and #2, but terrible at #3. People need reassurance; they need updates. We love to know how things are going when they apply to us. So, tell them. Let them know if you will have to lay people off so they can plan accordingly. More importantly, let them know that they are safe and that your plan is progressing. At the end of the day, Crises are super tricky to handle. They are delicate matters, and your stakeholders will be anxious and agitated. Put their mind at ease by being Thorough in planning, swift and transparent in execution, and reassure them along the way to your goal. We all know recruiting season is extremely stressful. The process of hunting for internship opportunities online can be overwhelming and the moment you see a position you want to apply to, you’re probably already tailoring your resume and cover letter. I was in the state of trying to find the summer internship that aligned with my career objectives as closely as possible, preferably at a company that was going to give me great as well. Rejections are difficult and after a few of them, you start to feel less confident about your decisions and who knows, you may even begin to doubt your abilities as a candidate. perfect tech mentorship **Pick a skill & become a master at it**If you find yourself in my social circle during this time of the year, you would know that all I can talk about is . Employers want to see that you have confidence in your work (aka you know your sh**). Always be prepared to back up whatever you said you can do on your resume because interviewers are always testing to see how legit you are. I don’t have much experience with technical/coding interviews but I can at least say that for design, interviewers want to get inside your head during design challenges. All they wanted to see was whether I could make design decisions in addition to analyzing my thinking process ( in the design world). So my advice to you would be to always have a reasoning behind your decisions.
