Do you ever meet those people who just ooze confidence? Their posture is perfect, their investment portfolio is on-point, and their business is already thriving after one year of operation. You can hardly help but be drawn in by their radiant energy. But when you ask them how they manage to live a superhuman life, they respond with, “I manifest my dreams!” and all of your respect for them quickly diminishes. There’s a lot of stigma around manifestation and the in our society. There are plenty of believers, too — don’t get me wrong. Most of the time, though, we scoff at this concept that seems to invoke ancient magic and invisible energy from the universe. Law of Attraction Recently, though, I spoke with a woman who I’m certain would change your mind in one simple conversation. I know I was convinced. See, manifestation doesn’t have to be this strange channeling of the powers of the universe (unless you want it to, of course). As my guest Natasha Graziano informed me, a lot of the mechanics actually come down to neuroscience. This is what we’ll be exploring in today’s newsletter — so let’s dive in. How manifestation is viewed in the business world Natasha Graziano was my last April guest on the Success Story Podcast, and I want to explore her incredible takes on manifestation in just a moment. First, though, let’s take a tour through the ways in which we view (and misinterpret) manifestation in the business world. The shortcut to success? We’ll start with one of the most common misinterpretations of manifestation in business: the get-rich-quick scheme. Too often, we view manifestation as a way to circumvent the natural order of things. Most business people know that, in reality, there’s no shortcut to financial success — and this is where many people grow skeptical of manifestation. In reality, manifestation was never supposed to be about taking shortcuts or magically bypassing the work that’s necessary for success. Rather, it’s about aligning your thoughts and actions with what you want to achieve and then allowing the natural way of things to run its course. The spiritual ‘woo-woo’ Another common turn-off for business people is the spiritual affiliations often associated with manifestation. In fact, some businesspeople view the very idea of manifestation as a “woo-woo” concept that has nothing to do with the real world. Now, I don’t want to speak for all businesspeople — but I know that the majority of them are logical, rational thinkers. In fact, if you look at the Myers-Briggs personality types of successful business people, they all include Thinking (rather than Feeling) and Judging (rather than Perceiving). four most common In other words, business people are typically more interested in actionable steps that will produce tangible results, rather than in concepts that can be difficult to measure or quantify. And there’s no denying that manifestation has spiritual links in its theoretical content, which can’t really be measured or quantified. The Problem of Inconsistency Finally, there is the glaring inconsistency problem — and this also tends to surface in religious criticism. If manifestation doesn’t work for everyone, why should it work for the minority? And, furthermore, if it does work for some people but not for others, what accounts for the difference? These are all valid points that deserve careful consideration. After all, manifestation is an incredibly powerful tool — and we should be wary of any technique that has the potential to produce such vast outcomes. But at the same time, I think this also stems from a misunderstanding that manifestation is somehow synonymous with miracle-working or prayer. As you’ll see in Natasha’s responses, though, manifestation relies more upon our own discipline and mindset than any outside force. In this way, it’s more like a than a miracle — and that’s a much more tangible concept for most of us. self-fulfilling prophecy So let’s get into Natasha’s thoughts on the matter. This is one of the main questions I explored with Natasha in our interview, not just for the sake of my audience, but for myself as well. I’m no skeptic, — but I do get stumped when people begin straying from reality into the esoteric. per se To me, manifesting something means that you’re constantly thinking about it. You’re already assuming that you have the things you want so that all the actions you take in your day-to-day are subconsciously geared towards your goals. Natasha takes it a step further, however, integrating principles of neuroscience and the ancient patterns our brains have always followed. “I help people unlock their full human potential. I help people understand how to bring the ancient wisdom and the neuroscience together and where they meet. I knock out the skepticism, I knock out the woo-woo — I’m not interested in ‘Think positively, and it will all appear!’ No, forget it.” Right off the bat, I’m on board with this interpretation of things. I think taking a down-to-earth approach is what will help remove the stigma around these types of practices. “Our mind is this piece of hardware, two million years old. It’s the most incredible piece of hardware that we have in our body. It helps us to function, and it also helps us malfunction if we don’t use it correctly. Sometimes you’ve got to unlearn what you know to grow.” So, what are the mechanics behind manifestation? Natasha was kind enough to talk through some of the main points in her book, , which hasn’t even been released for wider purchase yet. She’s got an immense knowledge base when it comes to this stuff, and I was excited to dig in. Be It Until You Become It Neuroscience and the anatomy of our thoughts “Neuroscience is something I’ve researched for many, many, many years. We have a part of our brain called the reticular activating system. In the lower part of the brain, it filters two million bits of data every second — colors and sounds and things you see. And it shows you the things that you deem as important.” I’d heard of this concept before. If you notice a yellow car, suddenly you’re seeing them everywhere. If you believe in bad luck, you’ll begin focusing on all the bad things that happen to you. “Anything you focus your mind on is what you deem as important. So if you are thinking thoughts of imposter syndrome and negativity — “I’m not worthy of love”, “I’m not worthy of the pay rise”, “I’m not worthy of having a good podcast” — your reticular activating system is going to show you evidence to prove that that belief system that you apparently deem as important is real.” I actually did a quick bit of research on this, because it sounds a lot like confirmation bias. Dr Carol Dweck, one of the most influential researchers in the field of mindset, talks about something called the ; if you tell yourself that improvement is impossible and your goals are unachievable, you stop trying. All the evidence points to failure before you’ve even started. Fixed Mindset “But if you start thinking thoughts of worthiness, of abundance, of wealth, of something different,” Natasha explained, “Those new neural pathways, the synaptic connections, change. Your reticular activating system shows you new evidence around you. So it is up to you.” That last remark resonated with me — What turns a lot of people away from manifestation is the misconception that you give all responsibility over to the ‘powers that be’ — but as Natasha explains, it doesn’t work like that. Refusing to take control is turning down an active role in your own life. it is up to you. You can change your thoughts Not many people are aware of this, but our thoughts are totally within our control. They aren’t like stray hairs that refuse to be tamed on a humid day — we can change our entire mindset. The well-respected Dr. Caroline Leaf has spent much of her career through extensive research. But it takes action, and it takes work. proving this fact “The other day, I was feeling amazing,” Natasha said, “But I didn’t start my day like that. I started my day in a very bad way. So how do you change those thoughts? You shake it off. You go do yoga, you go for a run, you literally physically shake the body. Because when you shake up the body, the DNA physically moves. The cells move. The atoms move. We change.” This is totally based on science, by the way. It’s been proven time and time again that our physical state directly correlates with our mental state. Exercise sends more blood and oxygen to the brain, and it also stimulates the release of endorphins — aka the “happy hormone.” This is why so many people swear by things like yoga and meditation. They help to quiet the mind, and they allow us to focus on the present moment. This is key because our thoughts tend to wander towards the past or future. And no, I am not suggesting that physical movement is a cure-all. Conventional medicine has its place in mental health treatment, just as therapy does. However, sometimes you just wake up on the wrong side of the bed, and you need to be shaken up like a snow globe to get back to your right mindset. You are your habits Natasha had one last piece of advice to help with building a manifestation mindset: be aware of your habits, and pull out the weeds as soon as they germinate. She shared a great rule of thumb to remember — your thoughts become your feelings, your feelings become your habits, and your habits become you. “Your habits become you. Who we are by the age of 30 years old is just an amalgamation of our habits. What we do, what we do regularly, and what we believe — that’s who we are,” Natasha explained. It’s essentially a reworking of the infamous quote from Lao Tzu: Watch your thoughts, they become your words; watch your words, they become your actions; watch your actions, they become your habits; watch your habits, they become your character; watch your character, it becomes your destiny. You don’t need research to back this up (although I’m sure you could find it). Isn’t this simply reality for every single one of us? If you spend lots of time being inactive, you become unfit. If you spend most of your days reading, you become well-learned. And now I’m really beginning to understand what it is to manifest: it’s to take responsibility for your actions and to hold every thought captive. But how do you actually do it? After a quick surface Google search of “how to manifest your dream life”, it was made clear to me that half of the advice on the internet right now is airy-fairy nonsense. (The other half is completely bizarre). To be honest, I think knowing how to manifest simply comes from a deeper understanding of what we talked about in Natasha’s interview. If you understand that your thoughts can quickly become your actions and that your actions can create your reality, you are well on your way to attracting the things you want. I would take it a step further and say you’re already manifesting without even knowing it. Of course, you might be manifesting the wrong things — failure, a lack of confidence, friendship loss, etc. — but you’re still manifesting through every decision you make, every word you speak, and every emotion you feel. The key is to become more aware of your thoughts and feelings and learn how to direct them in the right way. In closing I’ll round out the newsletter with some practical advice Natasha gave on changing your habits and your mindset: “Write down every single thing that you’ve done from the morning until the evening. Before you go to bed, look back at every single thing you wrote down, and mark them out of 10. So you had your coffee? That was a nine out of 10. You had a negative call, so that’s a two out of 10. “Now, why am I asking you to rate them out of 10? Because anything that is under an eight out of 10 is something you want to dig out of your garden. You want to uproot and get it out of your garden — it’s a motherf*cking weed.” Does she need to say more? Get rid of those weeds, and get the life you want. I know you’re more than capable. In light of the extensive privacy debates of recent years, global companies are formulating new ways to approach privacy and its implementation in business. From May 1st, 2024, Apple is introducing new privacy changes – a privacy policy that will require all developers to attach a privacy manifest file, describing the data that is collected by the app and providing valid reasons for the use of its API. So, What Are Privacy Manifests? Essentially, a privacy manifest is a new-age tool that can provide more clarity for users and developers. A tool that can help identify your app’s dependency's privacy practices. It is a file that allows apps or third-party SDK developers to share information about the way they approach privacy. It comes in the form of a `plist` file, recording the data that is collected in the app. It shows the type of data an SDK collects, how the data is used, any links to users, and if this information is used for tracking (Apple also has an App Tracking Transparency policy). A privacy manifest can also record data collected by third-party SDKs. How does it provide detailed reasoning? For each API that requires justification for its use, the file lists the reasons for the use. The Deadlines and Requirements Starting with March 13th, Apple has already contacted app developers, urging them to implement privacy manifests in the updated versions. That was the first timestamp of this process. Now, from May 1st, all new and updated apps headed to the app store will require a privacy manifest to be approved. This includes all IOS-based apps, including tvOS, iPad OS, and even the latest VisionOS – all of which can be found in the App Store. This also includes all new or updated apps that will have a new third-party SDK (or the common ones too will become a breeze for developers. Benefits for All These privacy manifests are a great tool that are bound to change the global developers’ approach to privacy for the better, which will inevitably impact user experience as a result. Privacy manifests can help developers communicate and adhere to rules, creating more transparent and safe apps for the AppStore. Moreover, now that all third-party SDKs from a single app can be summarized in one privacy manifest report, the task of creating accurate Privacy Nutrition Labels. Creating the Privacy Manifest File You can start the process straight away – all you have to do is open Xcode 15 and select: File -> New -> File Then go to IOS, and select App Privacy from the Resource section in the panel. Press Next.


Choose your destination Folder – this is where the file will be saved. It will be named `PrivacyInfo.xcprivacy` by default. If you need your third-party SDK to be shared as a Static Library, you can use Xcode to bundle resources, including the privacy manifest file. Create a framework target in Xcode, select "Static Library," as its Mach-O type, and add the privacy manifest and other resources to the bundle. Done. 3. After saving, an Xcode Editor window will pop up on your screen for the file you saved above. Select the App Privacy Configuration entry, and add it by clicking the plus button on the right. Now, these are the steps for adding new Privacy Accessed API Type entries and new Privacy Accessed API Reasons. Continuing from step 3, click on the Privacy Accessed API Types entry. Here, you need to select the Item 0 entry and click the ‘add’ button.


Click on Privacy Accessed API Type, and set the entry value to File Timestamp.


Click on Item 0 once more to add Privacy Accessed API Reasons.


Select Item 0 under Privacy API Reasons, and set its value to what you need. From here on, to add new entries, all you need to do is repeat the 4 steps described above, and each time, add new values. In case you need extra Reasons/Categories for your app because of other libraries and plug-ins, those need to be in the manifest too. Time for a privacy report Luckily, Xcode can help you gather all the declared data from the privacy manifests into one single report, which comes incredibly useful in the case of a review. It comes as a PDF and looks something like the Privacy Nutrition Labels we mentioned before. To generate one, select Product, and then Archive, and select Generate Privacy Report. To Sum Up Now, there are numerous APIs for required reasons and collected data types that developers have to record according to Apple’s new Privacy Manifests policy, but we can get into those in another article. This manifesto details the launches planned by ISRO, (NSIL) and various Non-Governmental Entities (NGEs) for the fiscal years 2023-24 (Q4) and 2024-25. As is evident there is a notable increase in launches and in private sector involvement in the Indian space sector. The year 2023 stood as a milestone with the new Space Policy fostering rapid advancements in the sector. The Integrated Launch Manifesto is in line with Dept of Space’s vision on optimizing resources and encouraging innovation to establish India as a Global Manufacturing Hub for space activities, aligning with the vision of ‘Aatmnirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India). About 30 launch are planned for 2023-24 (Q4) & 2024-25 from SDSC, SHAR, half of which are catering to the commercial space sector of India with rest being user-funded, scientific missions or technology test launches. Out of the 14 commercial missions identified, 7 launches are being undertaken by M/s NSIL including 2 numbers of PSLVs being realized through an industry consortium.  This marks a substantial increase in launch activity compared to previous years and is a positive indicator of the expanding space ecosystem in the country. The key NGE highlights for this period include planned Sub-Orbital and Orbital launches by M/s Agnikul Cosmos and M/s Skyroot Aerospace. Claiming that sustainability, sustainable development goals, social responsibility, trust and safety, tech ethics, risk management are all “enemies” is very weird phrasing and to me it just shows how far he’s detached from the realities that humanity faces daily. Yes, there’s nothing wrong with having huge ambition and to dream of an interplanetary species but this is the stuff of science fiction written for a hundred years prior to his birth and nothing new. We had electric and hybrid cars over a hundred years ago but capitalism, political lobbying, greed and lack of infrastructure meant we had to wait a century before we had these choices available to us all. It wasn’t a lack of techno optimism that caused it, it was capitalism chasing profits and oddly enough the venture capitalists ensuring that it remained that way for safer returns. In other words, as I read through the manifesto five years later, I kept thinking about how far the actualization of this global community manifesto had come on human interaction. In essence, this article will be focusing on the disparities between online and physical communities, how important they are, and if online communities can override physical communities. However, in order to properly dissect the discussion of technological invention and its impact on humans globally, it is important that we begin to analyze each term of discussion. And the first is the online community and how it has affected human communities. Definition of online community According to Nicole B. Ellison, Professor of Communication Studies at the University of Michigan," an online community is a virtual space where people with a shared interest or purpose communicate and interact with each other. These communities can be found on social media platforms, forums, discussion boards, and other online spaces where people can connect and engage with one another." From Nicole's definition, an online community focuses on people with shared interests just like offline communities. And this is also what Zuckerberg explained when he noted that, "online communities are a bright spot, and we can strengthen existing physical communities by helping people come together online as well as offline. In the same way, connecting with friends online strengthens real relationships, developing this infrastructure will strengthen these communities, as well as enable completely new ones to form." Online Communities are essentially provided to serve humans and even connect them across the world or space creating a single global community of netizens. It can then be inferred that the sole purpose of the online community is This further pose another question: how connected are human with each other online? connectivity. In mentioning the goal of the global community, Zuckerberg noted that "our goal is to strengthen existing communities by helping us come together online as well as offline, as well as enabling us to form completely new communities, transcending physical location. However, will these online communities totally overpower the physical communities? What is an offline/physical community? Sociologist Ray Oldenburg defines offline communities as a "third place that host[s] the regular, voluntary, informal, and happily anticipated gatherings of individuals beyond the realms of home and work. These third places are anchor points in community life and facilitate and foster broader, more creative interaction.” Offline communities have existed since the beginning of human interaction. Humans' lowest cadre of evolution, culture, ultimately shows the essence of human communities and how it consequently led to the formation of families, villages, towns, and empires. Taking the example of the world's best sitcom Friends, the major characters Ross, Joey, Chandler, Monica, Phoebe, and Rachael had their meetings in a cafe called Central Perk where they got to know each other’s interests and biases. This shows that humans still function effectively with or without online communities. Before jumping to a conclusion, and being careful of committing a fallacious point, I circulated a research question to know how humans really feel about physical and online communities. My revelation of this discussion In this research, I asked 31 people which of the options they would choose if they had the opportunity between online and offline communities. With 31 responses, I had my conclusion which consisted of 58.1% of people choosing an offline community and 41.9% of people choosing an online community. While I sighed, another point grasp my view which can be noted that: while the offline community has the highest percentage, it was a drag with the closing percentage of the online community. This indeed verifies that the online community is closing in on the physical community and perhaps in a few decades, the physical community will be replaced with a totality of online community such that instead of being in a church, we all could stay at home, wear our Hi-Tech glasses and our hologram appears in one of the pews. Back to Mark's manifesto, while reading the various communities proposed, one thing that caught my attention is the centralization of power of the company advocating this global community. We must note that the online community is cohabitating with Facebook who has control of the data of billions of people, leaving large swathes of the human population susceptible to the guidelines and edicts of whoever controls the social media titan. It is this point Eugen Rochko, the founder of Mastodon, shares with my view when he writes that “Facebook simply cannot give anyone the power to do anything, because that power will always, ultimately, reside in Facebook itself, which controls both the software, the servers, and the moderation policies.” However, in providing answers, he notes that: “The ultimate power is in giving people the ability to create their own spaces, their communities, to modify the software as they see fit, but without sacrificing the ability of people from different communities to interact with each other.” Which means before any human can fully function as a member of an online community, they must have the power to create a quintessential physical community to which they have been so used to before. And this power focuses on them not being subjected to any guidelines they don't have a say in creating. Conclusion In conclusion, online communities have helped people to feel connected despite the distance barrier, and even feel belonged due to shared interests and beliefs. However, Yuval N. Horari, in his book 21 Lessons for the 21st Century notes that “in many cases online comes at the expense of offline, and there is a fundamental difference between the two. Physical communities have a depth that virtual communities cannot match, at least not in the near future.” Hence, in my opinion, online communities are as great as physical communities, but if I am sick in home, my friends from another country can only wish me well but cannot bring me chicken soup to accelerate my recovery. As a result, it’s fair to say that online communities strengthening physical communities, as envisioned by Zuckerberg, is yet to close the gap. This is because it is hard to change the fundamental nature of human core. History has thought us that were the main ingredient for the evolution of empires, and while the evolution of online communities is a good step forward in bridging the distance barrier, physical communities are still ten times important. However, perhaps in years to come, with a fundamental revolution of artificial intelligence, humanity may reach a point where the online community will be the choicest and not an option base on a global lockdown. physical communities

He was known to be an ardent spiritualist—it was even said that he had challenged Huxley to a public discussion on materialism, and he came to the biological lectures and worked intermittently, in order, he explained, to fight disbelief with its own weapons. He rose greedily to Smithers’ controversial bait. “I say no!” he said, calling down the narrow laboratory and following his voice. He spoke with the ghost of a lisp. “Pardon my interrupting, sir. The question interests me profoundly. I hope I don’t intrude. Excuse me, sir. Make it personal. Am I a—fool, or an impostor?” “Well,” parried Smithers, with all a South Kensington student’s want of polish, “that’s a bit personal.” “Assume, sir, that I am an honest observer.” “Well?” “I have seen spirits, heard spirits, felt the touch of spirits,” He opened his pale eyes very widely. “Fool, then,” said Smithers in an undertone which did not reach the ears of the spiritualist. “You may have been deceived,” paraphrased Lewisham. “I can assure you ... others can see, hear, feel. I have tested, sir. Tested! I have some scientific training and I have employed tests. Scientific and exhaustive tests! Every possible way. I ask you, sir—have you given the spirits a chance?” “It is only paying guineas to humbugs,” said Smithers. “There you are! Prejudice! Here is a man denies the facts and consequently won’t see them, won’t go near them.” “But you wouldn’t have every man in the three kingdoms, who disbelieved in spirits, attend siances before he should be allowed to deny?” “Most assuredly yes. Most assuredly yes! He knows nothing about it till then.” The argument became heated. The little old gentleman was soon under way. He knew a person of the most extraordinary gifts, a medium ... “Paid?” asked Smithers. “Would you muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn?” said Lagune promptly. Smithers’ derision was manifest. “Would you distrust a balance because you bought it? Come and see.” Lagune was now very excited and inclined to gesticulate and raise his voice. He invited the whole class incontinently to a series of special siances. “Not all at once—the spirits—new influences.” But in sections. “I warn you we may get nothing. But the chances are ... I would rejoice infinitely ...” So it came about that Lewisham consented to witness a spirit-raising. Miss Heydinger it was arranged should be there, and the sceptic Smithers, Lagune, his typewriter and the medium would complete the party. Afterwards there was to be another party for the others. Lewisham was glad he had the moral support of Smithers. “It’s an evening wasted,” said Smithers, who had gallantly resolved to make the running for Lewisham in the contest for the Forbes medal. “But I’ll prove my case. You see if I don’t.” They were given an address in Chelsea. The house, when Lewisham found it at last, proved a large one, with such an air of mellowed dignity that he was abashed. He hung his hat up for himself beside a green-trimmed hat of straw in the wide, rich-toned hall. Through an open door he had a glimpse of a palatial study, book shelves bearing white busts, a huge writing-table lit by a green-shaded electric lamp and covered thickly with papers. The housemaid looked, he thought, with infinite disdain at the rusty mourning and flamboyant tie, and flounced about and led him upstairs. She rapped, and there was a discussion within. “They’re at it already, I believe,” she said to Lewisham confidentially. “Mr. Lagune’s always at it.” There were sounds of chairs being moved, Smithers’ extensive voice making a suggestion and laughing nervously. Lagune appeared opening the door. His grizzled face seemed smaller and his big grey eyes larger than usual. “We were just going to begin without you,” he whispered. “Come along.” The room was furnished even more finely than the drawing-room of the Whortley Grammar School, hitherto the finest room (except certain of the State Apartments at Windsor) known to Lewisham. The furniture struck him in a general way as akin to that in the South Kensington Museum. His first impression was an appreciation of the vast social superiority of the chairs; it seemed impertinent to think of sitting on anything quite so quietly stately. He perceived Smithers standing with an air of bashful hostility against a bookcase. Then he was aware that Lagune was asking them all to sit down. Already seated at the table was the Medium, Chaffery, a benevolent-looking, faintly shabby gentleman with bushy iron-grey side-whiskers, a wide, thin-lipped mouth tucked in at the corners, and a chin like the toe of a boot. He regarded Lewisham critically and disconcertingly over gilt glasses. Miss Heydinger was quite at her ease and began talking at once. Lewisham’s replies were less confident than they had been in the Gallery of Old Iron; indeed there was almost a reversal of their positions. She led and he was abashed. He felt obscurely that she had taken an advantage of him. He became aware of another girlish figure in a dark dress on his right. Everyone moved towards the round table in the centre of the room, on which lay a tambourine and a little green box. Lagune developed unsuspected lengths of knobby wrist and finger directing his guests to their seats. Lewisham was to sit next to him, between him and the Medium; beyond the Medium sat Smithers with Miss Heydinger on the other side of him, linked to Lagune by the typewriter. So sceptics compassed the Medium about. The company was already seated before Lewisham looked across Lagune and met the eyes of the girl next that gentleman. It was Ethel! The close green dress, the absence of a hat, and a certain loss of colour made her seem less familiar, but did not prevent the instant recognition. And there was recognition in her eyes. Immediately she looked away. At first his only emotion was surprise. He would have spoken, but a little thing robbed him of speech. For a moment he was unable to remember her surname. Moreover, the strangeness of his surroundings made him undecided. He did not know what was the proper way to address her—and he still kept to the superstition of etiquette. Besides—to speak to her would involve a general explanation to all these people ... “Just leave a pin-point of gas, Mr. Smithers, please,” said Lagune, and suddenly the one surviving jet of the gas chandelier was turned down and they were in darkness. The moment for recognition had passed. The joining of hands was punctiliously verified, the circle was linked little finger to little finger. Lewisham’s abstraction received a rebuke from Smithers. The Medium, speaking in an affable voice, premised that he could promise nothing, he had no “directing” power over manifestations. Thereafter ensued a silence.... For a space Lewisham was inattentive to all that happened. He sat in the breathing darkness, staring at the dim elusive shape that had presented that remembered face. His mind was astonishment mingled with annoyance. He had settled that this girl was lost to him for ever. The spell of the old days of longing, of the afternoons that he had spent after his arrival in London, wandering through Clapham with a fading hope of meeting her, had not returned to him. But he was ashamed of his stupid silence, and irritated by the awkwardness of the situation. At one moment he was on the very verge of breaking the compact and saying “Miss Henderson” across the table.... How was it he had forgotten that “Henderson”? He was still young enough to be surprised at forgetfulness. Smithers coughed, one might imagine with a warning intention. Lewisham, recalling his detective responsibility with an effort, peered about him, but the room was very dark. The silence was broken ever and again by deep sighs and a restless stirring from the Medium. Out of this mental confusion Lewisham’s personal vanity was first to emerge. What did she think of him? Was she peering at him through the darkness even as he peered at her? Should he pretend to see her for the first time when the lights were restored? As the minutes lengthened it seemed as though the silence grew deeper and deeper. There was no fire in the room, and it looked, for lack of that glow, chilly. A curious scepticism arose in his mind as to whether he had actually seen Ethel or only mistaken someone else for her. He wanted the siance over in order that he might look at her again. The old days at Whortley came out of his memory with astonishing detail and yet astonishingly free from emotion.... He became aware of a peculiar sensation down his back, that he tried to account for as a draught.... Suddenly a beam of cold air came like a touch against his face, and made him shudder convulsively. Then he hoped that she had not marked his shudder. He thought of laughing a low laugh to show he was not afraid. Someone else shuddered too, and he perceived an extraordinarily vivid odour of violets. Lagune’s finger communicated a nervous quivering. What was happening? The musical box somewhere on the table began playing a rather trivial, rather plaintive air that was strange to him. It seemed to deepen the silence about him, an accent on the expectant stillness, a thread of tinkling melody spanning an abyss. Lewisham took himself in hand at this stage. What was happening? He must attend. Was he really watching as he should do? He had been wool-gathering. There were no such things as spirits, mediums were humbugs, and he was here to prove that sole remaining Gospel. But he must keep up with things—he was missing points. What was that scent of violets? And who had set the musical box going? The Medium, of course; but how? He tried to recall whether he had heard a rustling or detected any movement before the music began. He could not recollect. Come! he must be more on the alert than this! He became acutely desirous of a successful exposure. He figured the dramatic moment he had prepared with Smithers—Ethel a spectator. He peered suspiciously into the darkness. Somebody shuddered again, someone opposite him this time. He felt Lagune’s finger quiver still more palpably, and then suddenly the raps began, abruptly, all about him. Rap!—making him start violently. A swift percussive sound, tap, rap, dap, under the table, under the chair, in the air, round the cornices. The Medium groaned again and shuddered, and his nervous agitation passed sympathetically round the circle. The music seemed to fade to the vanishing point and grew louder again. How was it done? He heard Lagune’s voice next him speaking with a peculiar quality of breathless reverence, “The alphabet?” he asked, “shall we—shall we use the alphabet?” A forcible rap under the table. “No!” interpreted the voice of the Medium. The raps were continued everywhere. Of course it was trickery, Lewisham endeavoured to think what the mechanism was. He tried to determine whether he really had the Medium’s little finger touching his. He peered at the dark shape next him. There was a violent rapping far away behind them with an almost metallic resonance. Then the raps ceased, and over the healing silence the little jet of melody from the musical box played alone. And after a moment that ceased also.... The stillness was profound, Mr. Lewisham was now highly strung. Doubts assailed him suddenly, and an overwhelming apprehension, a sense of vast occurrences gathering above him. The darkness was a physical oppression.... He started. Something had stirred on the table. There was the sharp ping of metal being struck. A number of little crepitating sounds like paper being smoothed. The sound of wind without the movement of air. A sense of a presence hovering over the table. The excitement of Lagune communicated itself in convulsive tremblings; the Medium’s hand quivered. In the darkness on the table something faintly luminous, a greenish-white patch, stirred and hopped slowly among the dim shapes. The object, whatever it was, hopped higher, rose slowly in the air, expanded. Lewisham’s attention followed this slavishly. It was ghostly—unaccountable—marvellous. For the moment he forgot even Ethel. Higher and higher this pallid luminosity rose overhead, and then he saw that it was a ghostly hand and arm, rising, rising. Slowly, deliberately it crossed the table, seemed to touch Lagune, who shivered. It moved slowly round and touched Lewisham. He gritted his teeth. There was no mistaking the touch, firm and yet soft, of finger-tips. Almost simultaneously, Miss Heydinger cried out that something was smoothing her hair, and suddenly the musical box set off again with a reel. The faint oval of the tambourine rose, jangled, and Lewisham heard it pat Smithers in the face. It seemed to pass overhead. Immediately a table somewhere beyond the Medium began moving audibly on its castors. It seemed impossible that the Medium, sitting so still beside him, could be doing all these things—grotesquely unmeaning though they might be. After all.... The ghostly hand was hovering almost directly in front of Mr. Lewisham’s eyes. It hung with a slight quivering. Ever and again its fingers flapped down and rose stiffly again. Noise! A loud noise it seemed. Something moving? What was it he had to do? Lewisham suddenly missed the Medium’s little finger. He tried to recover it. He could not find it. He caught, held and lost an arm. There was an exclamation. A faint report. A curse close to him bitten in half by the quick effort to suppress it. Tzit! The little pinpoint of light flew up with a hiss. Lewisham, standing, saw a circle of blinking faces turned to the group of two this sizzling light revealed. Smithers was the chief figure of the group; he stood triumphant, one hand on the gas tap, the other gripping the Medium’s wrist, and in the Medium’s hand—the incriminatory tambourine. “How’s this, Lewisham?” cried Smithers, with the shadows on his face jumping as the gas flared. “Caught!” said Lewisham loudly, rising in his place and avoiding Ethel’s eyes. “What’s this?” cried the Medium. “Cheating,” panted Smithers. “Not so,” cried the Medium. “When you turned up the light ... put my hand up ... caught tambourine ... to save head.” “Mr. Smithers,” cried Lagune. “Mr. Smithers, this is very wrong. This—shock—” The tambourine fell noisily to the floor. The Medium’s face changed, he groaned strangely and staggered back. Lagune cried out for a glass of water. Everyone looked at the man, expecting him to fall, save Lewisham. The thought of Ethel had flashed back into his mind. He turned to see how she took this exposure in which he was such a prominent actor. He saw her leaning over the table as if to pick up something that lay across it. She was not looking at him, she was looking at the Medium. Her face was set and white. Then, as if she felt his glance, her eyes met his. She started back, stood erect, facing him with a strange hardness in her eyes. In the moment Lewisham did not grasp the situation. He wanted to show that he was acting upon equal terms with Smithers in the exposure. For the moment her action simply directed his attention to the object towards which she had been leaning, a thing of shrivelled membrane, a pneumatic glove, lying on the table. This was evidently part of the mediumistic apparatus. He pounced and seized it. “Look!” he said, holding it towards Smithers. “Here is more! What is this?” He perceived that the girl started. He saw Chaffery, the Medium, look instantly over Smithers’ shoulders, saw his swift glance of reproach at the girl. Abruptly the situation appeared to Lewisham; he perceived her complicity. And he stood, still in the attitude of triumph, with the evidence against her in his hand! But his triumph had vanished. “Ah!” cried Smithers, leaning across the table to secure it. “Good old Lewisham!... Now we have it. This is better than the tambourine.” His eyes shone with triumph. “Do you see, Mr. Lagune?” said Smithers. “The Medium held this in his teeth and blew it out. There’s no denying this. Let’s take a look at web3 from a non-technical perspective One of the most common questions in the Web3 space is also one of its most fundamental: “what exactly is it?” Is it a type of technology? Is it a new protocol? Is it an idea? Here, I will give my perspective on what web3 is, from a more conceptual and theoretical perspective. I will not be referring so much to the tools that encompass it, so much as I will be focusing on the ideological drivers behind it. The aim is to give people a genuine overview of what means. web3 A New Wave of the Web Beyond anything else, Web3 is a sociological concept. It is the idea that our online activity and behavior should function in a way that involves no intermediaries or middlemen. It is the belief that humans deserve to congregate freely, and that they should have autonomy over all that they do digitally. At the heart of this, is the notion of decentralization. This is because people who believe in web3 believe that centralized bodies cannot be trusted to have our best interests, and cannot be trusted to give us the autonomy we deserve. With this in mind, web3 is often viewed as the death of the platform. Projects like Facebook, Google, and Microsoft often exert their influence on the web through their centralized control of the online platforms that we use. The web3 community, however, considers this to be problematic as centralized controllers can never be trusted to care about us. This is prevalent through the , , and . consistent selling of our data ethical scandals dark UX patterns As a result, this is why blockchain technology has become synonymous with web3– blockchains allow for decentralized online systems to exist; therefore, they are seen as the antidote to . our platform overlords Trust and Trustlessness The notion of trust plays a huge role in web3. The space is deeply aware of how fraught the idea of trust really is. Our current systems (digital, financial, and otherwise) are built on . When somebody trusts you, doors open for you. But trust can be a tricky thing to attain, especially when you are part of a marginalized group. It is no surprise that than they are for white individuals. trust centralized loans are harder to get in the West for minorities Decentralized loans on the other hand…. Now, they’re much easier to get. That’s because with decentralization comes . Blockchains do not (always) require trust, meaning that they do not judge with prejudice. This gives people a greater chance of getting a leg up in the space. As a result, this has (in some ways) created a more friendly atmosphere in the industry, where people involved in web3 are and meeting new people than people in other industries are. I have seen this first hand myself– some of the best connections I made in this industry have been total strangers who I reached out to on a whim (and vice versa). With that in mind, community building is a huge factor. People in this industry believe the best way to congregate is to reach out to one another and form ecosystems without platforms, where hierarchies cannot exist as everybody has equal power. trustlessness far more open to making connections Self-Sovereghty Above All The core of web3 is that of self-sovereignty. People in the industry are disinterested in getting engulfed by platforms, or being judged by centralized institutions. They are focused on providing tools for freedom and flourishing. Web3 is all about allowing people to act without having to look over their shoulder at larger corporations that wish them to act in certain ways or give up certain controls. It is about making everybody an island, but building bridges between each island, so we can visit each other without losing a sense of self. Final Words The issue with understanding web3 is that many people begin by looking at the technology, but the technology is merely a vehicle. It is the ideological passion that is in the driver’s seat, making everything happen. Web3 — An Ideological Manifesto

Ok, this might sound like shameless self-promo, but I’m hoping you will indulge me. I hope Hackernoon lets me run this article - I think they’ll let it slide cause Utsav is the homie, and also because if you can look past the self-promotion you will see I’m making an important philosophical point. I started HellaDoge because I got frustrated with Bitclout. At first, I was really excited about Bitclout, I thought it could be THE Web3 site, but I was asking friends to join and they weren’t able to sign up. I began to realize that BITCLOUT IS TOO COMPLICATED, just like the last Web3 company I started, Everipedia. It’s not just easy to sign up like Instagram, you need a Metamask wallet, which even I don’t have - I had signed up for Bitclout before you needed it, but they changed it and made it harder. Another annoying issue is that Web3 companies don’t pay you in Bitcoin, they pay you in their own shitcoin which is hard to sell. I had made $300 on Bitclout but I had no way of cashing out. So I decided to launch HellaDoge, with the idea being that it will be just as easy to sign up as Instagram, and you get Dogecoin for using it, both for creating content and for passively scrolling. But WHERE IS THE DOGECOIN GOING TO COME FROM?? The economics weren’t what motivated me to launch HellaDoge, but I’ve come to realize that’s the most important aspect. EVERY SINGLE WEB 3 SITE - Steemit, Bitclout, Everipedia - runs on the premise that crypto is going to turn the internet into an anarchist fantasy land where we no longer need ads because the users get paid from inflation. That’s totally insane!! Like it or not, one major reason the internet creates so much value is the targeted ads. That’s why businesses switch from TV and radio to the internet - because it makes your data valuable. It’s messed up that Mark Zuckerberg steals all the “data money” and is resultantly worth hundreds of billions, but I think we should redistribute the payout from the data rather than simply destroying it. At first HellaDoge was just going to run Google Ads, but it took Google a while to approve us and we already had some early users who were getting restless waiting to start getting the Doge. So I posted on my Facebook (aka the ENEMY app) asking if anybody wants to sponsor HellaDoge for $69 a month - users would see the “Sponsored Doge” every time they refresh. I got a sponsor! The first sponsor was Underground Cellar, where the CEO is my homie from Y Combinator. He told me Underground Cellar has a lot of crypto customers, so he gave it a shot. The first month we launched, HellaDoge only had a few hundred users. But Underground Cellar made $800 REVENUE from the $69 spend! That’s pretty crazy. Now HellaDoge has been live for 6 months, still in beta but hundreds of thousands of users, top 50K Alexa rank in the US. But the coolest statistic is that we’ve already made thousands of dollars in revenue. We’re “Ramen Profitable” even with the users getting 80%. This is refreshing for me, after having started Genius where the CEO didn’t let us run ads for years - we had MILLIONS of users and were making zero dollars. He thought ads would deteriorate Genius, even though I had lots of fun ideas for lyrics-based ads. The Genius CEO has the mentality of many crypto bros today about ad-free anarchist utopia. These people - usually with rich parents - seem to think capitalism is BAD. I actually think capitalism is chillAF, you just gotta distribute the gains properly, then it resembles socialism. The reason HellaDoge is making so much revenue is because the ads are insanely effective for other sponsors, just like they were for Undergound Cellar. Think about it: would you rather support a company who is wasting your time to give Mark Zuckerberg money, or a company who is giving YOU 80% of the money for your time?? : giving the users 80% of the money for seeing the ad completely transforms what advertising means! It goes from a hostile relationship between client and business to a symbiotic relationship. COMPARING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF WEB3 ADS ON HELLADOGE TO WEB2 ADS ON INSTAGRAM IS LIKE COMPARING THE MARKET CAP OF THE TAXI INDUSTRY TO UBER HellaDoge gives ⅔ of the ad money to content creators, but ⅓ goes to the passive users. For now, it’s not much. But if the entire internet were giving 80% away, I think even a passive user could make $1K a month scrolling the internet. The “DATA DIVIDEND”, sort of like an internet-based Universal Basic Income. That’s the main reason I built HellaDoge: I want to end poverty. But the point I’m trying to make in this essay is, the pie we are giving away 80% of in the HellaDoge system could be WAYYYY WAY bigger than the pie the existing internet is giving away. By giving the ad money to the users, the ads become a lot more effective. Just like ad targeting was the huge breakthrough between TV ads and internet ads, giving 80% of the money to users will be the big breakthrough between Web2 internet ads and Web3 internet ads HellaDoge is pioneering. I’ve been drawn to stuff like this before, but HellaDoge can make it scale. Ever since I was a little kid I was really into coupons - they sent us coupons in the mail and I loved sorting through them seeing which ones I could use. I met the founder of Swagbucks right when Everipedia started and I thought it was a site that needs to start giving out Bitcoin. My Web3 philosophy is basically that Web3 can turn the positive psychology behind coupons into an economic revolution. HellaDoge can do for coupons what Amazon did for mail order catalogs! That would be so swag. Someday I hope HellaDoge also incorporates surveys users can take to get more Dogecoin, on top of the social network. Facebook is making a half-assed attempt at this, giving users a $5 Amazon gift card for taking surveys (called “Faceook Viewpoints”). But I don't think anybody does it. The first Web3 site I ever used was earn.com. You got bitcoin for surveys. It was the only Web3 company Silicon Valley invested in who is kind of doing what I’m trying to do. That’s because Balaji started it, and he’s the only person in Silicon Valley who understands crypto. But earn.com never got traction because it’s too boring. SOMEDAY, HellaDoge can end poverty, if we take over the whole internet. But for now, the users aren’t doing it for the money. Nobody is paying their rent with Doge! OUR USERS ARE IN IT FOR THE PHILOSOPHY. None of us want to be Mark Zuckerberg’s slaves. And our sponsors like it because the users like it. When a user sees an ad on Instagram, there is ANGER. When a user sees an ad on HellaDoge, there is LOVE! The more ads, the more Doge. I think HellaDoge will eventually replace Instagram and Twitter, because the tech behemoths won’t be able to catch up. The big Silicon Valley VCs invested $200 million in Bitclout and the site is awful, has terrible content, impossible to sign up or cash out, and users are quitting! Silicon Valley is pretending to care about Web3, but deep down inside they want to prove it won’t work. 20 years ago, Google wanted to pay! Youtube still pays, probably the only Web2 site that pays lots of users. Google also wanted to pay on Blogger.com, but it never caught on. But then this guy named MARK ZUCKERBERG came on the scene! He said that paying the users makes them feel like it’s work, and it’s better to make them think it’s a game. Paying makes it not fun. Mark Zuckerberg’s philosophy was why the CEO of my first company, Genius, forbade me from paying the users. I tried to start something called “CASH GENIUS” after we raised money in 2012, where some editors can get a $100 check for doing important things like putting up the lyrics to new albums. But the editors got mad, they said I’m discriminating in how I distribute the money. The Genius CEO cancelled Cash Genius and said it was a stupid idea. He told me about Mark Zuckerberg’s philosophy. He said that if I want to pay a user, I can hire someone full-time to come work out of the NYC office. Because it was my only option, I tried that a few times, hiring a power user to join full time. Every single one of them got fired after a year. IT MADE NO SENSE TO HIRE THEM FULL-TIME. The funny part was, these were good editors, but as soon as they came to nyc they’d stop actually editing anything on Genius, and would only focus on preparing for stupid meetings and office politics. The problem with “Cash Genius” was that getting paid in DOLLARS is not as fun as getting paid in doggy coins. Dogecoin is more like video game points, except worth money. So it’s still fun, but you get paid. Right now, Facebook and Twitter have thousands of employees making 6 figure salaries who use their site less than I do. And I get paid zero! I’ve noticed that when people work full-time for a tech company, they treat using the product like it’s KRYPTONITE! The only exception is people who work for Facebook are still addicted to Instagram because, let's face it, EVERYONE is addicted to Instagram. They have no choice!
