Documentation falls short in providing answers to specific questions. Slack Due to the absence of a precise guide, we decided to create our own, detailing all the headaches that arose along the way. So, let's navigate to the "Enterprise Application" section in Azure. With a new and exciting product, which has just been granted a huge valuation, for many, it would be time to sell up, relax, pump the brakes, and receive a few well-deserved pats on the back. However, far from cooling off, Slack was about to embark on its biggest challenge yet… Disrupting the Enterprise Market It’s a story as old as the Bible. David vs Goliath. Rocky vs Drago. It’s said that everyone loves an underdog, but that doesn’t get you far in the current, cut-throat business climate. Slack was about to enter the arena with a real software giant that had been around since Stewart Butterfield was just a toddler. The company had set its sights on an even grander stage—the enterprise market. This strategic shift had the potential to transform the entire trajectory of the business, either to the stratosphere or to bankruptcy. No pressure. Slack's initial success was fueled by its ability to transform how teams communicated and collaborated. As we covered earlier, Its user-friendly interface, robust integrations, and focus on enhancing productivity struck a chord with startups and small businesses. As Slack expanded its reach, it became clear that the enterprise market held immense potential. Stepping into the enterprise arena was no small feat. Established players dominated the landscape, with entrenched systems and massive user bases. The other side had all the latest tech, the staff and the deterrents. There were a million incentives not to. But they did. Slack had to prove its worth, not just as a nimble and innovative upstart, but as a platform capable of meeting the unique needs and demands of large-scale organizations. However, Slack would’ve been naive to think they would be the only business trying to capture this market. Coincidentally, they had just made a competitor out of the business which once nearly acquired them; Microsoft. In early 2016, Microsoft had considered bidding $8 billion for Slack, and would likely have been successful, if not for the personal intervention of tech-magnate Bill Gates. The founder was against the purchase, believing that the firm should instead focus on improving Skype for Business. Microsoft would go on to announce ‘Teams’ to the public as a direct competitor to Slack in late 2016 and launched their latest product worldwide on March 14th, 2017. However, Slack approached its new competition with unwavering confidence, believing in the unique value it brought to the table. They weren’t backing out of the ring, instead, they were ready to go toe-to-toe with one of the largest companies ever. On December 31, 2022, Slack a security breach that affected some of its customers. The attackers were able to gain access to private GitHub code repositories, which is concerning because companies store sensitive information on these repositories. reported In this blog post, we will look at what happened during the incident and the actions that were taken by Slack in response. We’ll also discuss similar tactics used by other companies for breaches last year, as well as actionable tips for businesses to secure their online platforms against cyber attacks. How the Attackers Gained Access to Private GitHub Code Repositories The attackers were able to gain access due to a security flaw in Slack’s authentication system. They used a technique called “brute force” to guess an organization’s password multiple times until they succeeded. Once they had access, they were able to use the token associated with that organization’s account and gain access to the private code repositories stored on GitHub. The fact that a brute force attack was successful indicates this particular portion of the authentication system was clearly overlooked or neglected. Slack is a powerful tool for communications in a company. Slack allows the creation of apps and enriches already a convenient default functionality. If you already have a handy tool that you like to add to your daily environment, creating a slack app would be a great way to do it. STEP 1. CREATING A SERVICE Let’s create a service that we will integrate into Slack. In order to do it let’s use the website . This website provides a message if you should deploy now. We will use it to take the provided message and return it as a text to integrate it into Slack later. https://www.shouldideploy.today/ So, let's create a spring boot application, and add a controller class. A Q&A With Slack's Rukmini Reddy on Data-Driven Mentorship, Career Paths, and Belonging

TL;DR As a new remote team, we struggled to establish communication practices that matched the efficiency of in-person, impromptu exchanges, leading to inefficient information flow and stilted collaboration. During the lead-up to our launch on Product Hunt, we discovered Slack huddles. These are informal, open calls in a Channel or Workspace, with a focus on audio-only chat, and were released to mimic the environment of office collaboration. Embracing Slack huddles enabled us to work much more collaboratively, problem-solve together, and emulated a ‘desk by desk’ environment, which increased our productivity by 50%, positively affected our wellbeing, and led to a hugely successful launch on Product Hunt. At the time of our launch on Product Hunt, we had two fantastic engineers working in Greece, our CTO Jason working out of Paris, and CEO Alex was based in London. Not exactly down the hall, then… The challenges of remote working Although we completely believe in being a remote work company, and intend to stay that way, getting off the ground as a brand new, fully distributed team wasn’t easy. One problem, which became apparent during the run-up to our Product Hunt launch, was our struggle to establish communication and collaboration practices that replaced in-person chats. If you’re running as a fully remote team, you’re removing the opportunity to walk over to a colleague to ask for their opinion or expertise, the ability to shout across the desk when a problem arises, and the impulsive chats at the coffee machine that might springboard into a new idea. We took the decision to work fully remotely understanding the above compromises (and removing the opportunity for constant in-person interruptions can actually do wonders for developer productivity), but we hadn’t yet established a system to replicate the benefits of in-person communication. Working asynchronously and trying to organize meetings was leading to more back-and-forth than meeting time, information flow was stilted, and the team didn’t feel particularly engaged in collaborative working. We had our work cut out for us to have a successful launch! What does launching on Product Hunt mean? Product Hunt is an online platform celebrating the best new software releases. Each product has a planned launch date, and a competitive algorithm based on engagement ranks all the releases in a 24-hour cycle. Getting to the number one spot on your release day can be a huge boon for a new product, but it isn’t an easy task. We had a date planned for our launch, we’d started engaging the community to build buzz; all we needed to do next was…finish the product. It was time for an all-out sprint, and if we didn’t find a way to work more collaboratively and efficiently, it simply wasn’t going to happen. Time for a Slack hack. What is Slack? Slack is a widely-used communication and collaboration platform, particularly popular among developers for useful functions like third party integrations and automations including deployment. During the run up to our Product Hunt launch date, we were on Slack constantly as we raced towards the finish line, and when we uncovered Slack ‘huddles’, the game changed for us. What are Slack huddles? A huddle on Slack is an informal, open call in a Channel or Workspace, with a focus on audio-only chat. Anyone in the group can drop in and out as they please, and people can share screens and draw or annotate. Released in spring 2020, the function was designed to “ ”, and what do you know, that’s just what we needed! mimic the fast, informal discussions that took place when everyone worked from the office How did Slack huddles help us increase productivity? Being able to jump into informal, unscheduled group calls whenever the need arose, have ad-hoc brainstorming sessions and, most importantly, simply hang out and code together in real time, turned remote work into a strategic advantage rather than a problem to solve. It offered a communication and collaboration solution that aligned with remote work, with the efficiency of face-to-face interaction. Huddles helped to emulate a environment; when all of us were in a huddle together, it felt like working together, even when we were tinkering on separate projects. This helped us adjust into a more team oriented and big-picture mindset: more a part of a whole than a single developer turning in work. ‘desk by desk’ Problems were , as we either spoke up in the huddle we were in, or quickly sent a request to start a new one. How Slack's Huddles Gave Us The Boost We Needed To Launch

Now, you are wondering- and so what? Well, there is more to Slack. If you are new to Slack, you are most likely traditional in maximizing it. You log into your workplace, scan for relevant messages, respond to them, and upload a report on your work etc. etc. etc. Boring! Here are 'new' ways to maximize Slack. 5 ways to maximize Slack If you think you have seen all of Slack, these may come as additional knowledge: 1. Make use of "my keywords" in the notification This is for you if you are often distracted in the middle of an important conversation or project  when someone writes something that's not relevant to you. This is for you if you want to get your stuff together- Use Slack's feature to filter out messages that contain specific words or phrases you want to be notified by. my keywords For example, you can avoid notifications about HR-related announcements and only receive alerts when your boss has something important to say. Log into you Slack workspace, go to to and select in the General section. Then, add a new keyword under : Preferences, Alerts & Notifications, "Turn off all notifications" Filters > My Keywords For instance, if you want to receive notifications about an "appointment", type in the My Keywords section as seen here: appointment If you want to receive notifications about "break, coffee time, content, edit" etc., write them like this in the My Keywords section and space them with a comma: If you are a content writer who is also in a writers and marketers' Slack community like me, use these keywords to specify the notifications you'd like to receive. This may make your job hunting easier as you'd receive essential notifications. 2. Take advantage of Slackbot Slackbot is a built-in bot that can help you with team onboarding, reminders, and more as an administrator. It can be customized to suit your needs like storing info about the team, answers to FAQs, or daily tips for employees. This ensures that all employees receive the same information at the same time. It saves you time and effort in training them on how to use Slack (or explaining a project or company policy over again). Especially when there are new entrants. For example, every team member will receive a notification/guide about how to use Slack regardless of when they join. You can program the bot to do that. Slackbot can even be used to effect order. You customize the bot to send warning messages when a user uses sensitive words, it will do so accordingly. If you are sharing a Google Docs link, you can stay on the app to access it. This way, you get to integrate your Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides into Slack. To give a little perspective: When a team member shares a file with you, you'll be notified with options to or directly from Slack without leaving the conversation where it was shared. They’ve made it easy to set up, work, collaborate, and communicate all in one place. The onus tends to fall on SaaS product managers to build great user experiences for their customers. A major component of an app's UX is excellent communication that users can customize based on their own preferences and toolsets. Slack is one app that does this extremely well and PMs can learn a lot from its many integrations and malleable notification preferences. What is it About Slack? There’s a reason over 12 million people across the globe use Slack. It has everything to do with the fact that the platform incorporates so cohesively into our work lives that it’s impossible not to be a willing participant. Integrations and automations consolidate all the notifications in one place—completely reducing notification bombardment, thanks to all the preferences and controls they allow their users to set. This means the user is more apt to tolerate and act on them. Sure, Slack is another work tool, and this means we can’t exactly turn it off during work hours. How Slack Does Notifications and Does It Well

For many organizations, Slack is the software of choice for business communication. Slack’s ubiquity in modern companies makes it one of the first notification integrations a SaaS company might want to build, possibly after email and mobile push notifications. In our experience, Slack notifications are a great way to reach business users (as Slack is mostly used in a business context) with time-sensitive alerts or action items while they’re at work. Because the users are already in work mode, Slack notifications are suitable for anything from collaboration on documents and spreadsheets to workflows like approval requests or data access permissions. Slack is less suited for notifications outside of a work context or out of working hours. To be able to send messages in Slack, a software system must integrate with . The resulting integration will allow your application to send Slack messages with helpful information to a Slack channel or a direct message thread. Here’s an example of a Slack message coming from : Slack’s API GitHub’s Slack integration Here’s another example of a Slack integration from : Salesforce Many organizations don’t quite know what to expect when building an integration for sending messages from their SaaS product to a Slack channel or a direct message. In this post, we offer details for developers who are planning to build a Slack integration for their product. Technical aspects of a Slack integration From a technical perspective, Slack offers a fairly conventional HTTP REST API, which will be straightforward to understand for developers who deal with web systems. The functionality made available through the API is extensive, and there are complex parts to it, but most Slack integrations for SaaS will likely only need to send messages. Messages are the core of Slack’s functionality, but we cover other actions that your app might need to take in Slack below. For sending messages, the in the Slack API documentation is a helpful starting point. The steps required to send a message are: Sending Messages guide Create a Slack app. Request the correct permissions from the user. Compose the message using one of Slack’s message types (or ). blocks Send the message via an API call. The main way to send a message is the POST chat.postMessage endpoint, but it’s also possible to use other endpoints with slightly different functionality: the endpoint, for example, sends messages that are only visible temporarily and for a specific user (helpful for things like error messages). It’s also possible, and in some cases easier, to send messages using an . chat.postEphemeral incoming webhook Beyond sending messages, other functionality that you can implement with Slack’s API includes: Slash commands — simple chatbot functionality via commands in Slack DMs or channels Editing messages that have already been sent — for example, if the information has been updated Bots that respond to direct mentions and interactions — for example, is an implementation of such a bot used by hundreds of teams Hubot Bots that monitor all message traffic in a specific Slack channel or direct message thread (less common due to how inefficient it is to scan all messages in high-volume Slack channels) Many software teams choose to develop all functionality relating to Slack or another messaging service either in a dedicated microservice (if you use microservice architecture) or at least in a separate section of your monolithic app. The reason to do this is to avoid tightly coupling the way you think about notifications to Slack’s API — doing so could cause issues when the time comes to add support for other messaging APIs. Another reason to use a separate service or namespace for the Slack integration is to implement message retries and other reliability-focused tweaks. Such code would be too complex to include inside your business logic. In our experience, there are a few points that developers might not be thinking about when building a Slack integration, and we encourage you to consider them: Many of our users run into Slack API rate limits at some point during their usage cycle. So it’s likely that you will need to retry sending a message at some point because of rate limits. Consider including retry functionality from the very beginning. Messages sent by integrations might need to include images or other files, so consider how you’ll handle attachments. Slack offers convenient functionality via the API that you can use, and it comes with built-in access controls. But you might prefer to . In that case, authenticating requests to files can become painful because you won’t have Slack’s access control mechanism to rely on. file upload use your own storage Make sure that your system is compliant with relevant regulations, in case you’re sending notifications that include PII or other sensitive data. The user experience of a Slack integration: Our recommendations When we advise our customers about Slack integrations, most of our advice centers less on the implementation details and more on the product functionality and customer experience side. We see teams who are building Slack notification functionality for their SaaS focus too much on sending Slack messages and not enough on the value those notifications deliver to their users. In this section, we offer a few recommendations on designing a helpful Slack notification experience. Use Slack status information for optimal notification experience Something that we find useful for many customers is keeping track of Slack statuses (the little “active” and ”away” indicators you see on people’s profiles). Consider whether you even want to send Slack notifications if someone is marked as being away in Slack — they might not be on their computer, or they might have intentionally changed their status. Is the notification you’re sending in Slack going to be actionable for someone on their phone? For many SaaS applications, the answer is no. Our recommendation on handling status is to send Slack notifications when the user is active in Slack, and when they are not active, using a different channel like email or mobile push. Create message templates and have a workflow for updating them In a SaaS product, it’s very unlikely that you’ll need just one type of Slack message. An app can require tens or hundreds of different notifications to be sent via Slack — and managing such large numbers of messages in your codebase can get tricky. We recommend using templates instead of hard-coding messages in your application. It’s likely that your message templates will change over time, and you might want to add new notification types as you develop your product. By relying more on templates you can simplify the code review process — it’s easier for a peer to review a template change in a separate file than to jump between templates and code. Another recommendation is to make templates editable outside of the code review process. This capability will enable colleagues outside of the development team to change and tweak notification templates themselves without the need to commit directly to the codebase. Translation and language preferences Are you going to only offer notifications in one language, or multiple? If you’re offering multiple languages, how does a user configure their preferences? You might want to add functionality within the Slack app that allows users to configure their language settings, or have a section within your web app (outside of Slack) with notification preferences. In any case, you need to store language preferences for each user and, eventually, have a good way to store translated versions of notification text as well.
